ASUU Set to Suspend Two Week Warning Strike Declared in October 2025

When the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) called a two week strike in October 2025, it was a clear plan to push the Federal Government to stick to the commitments they had made, namely, to pump more funds into universities, pay all the back pay and get the revitalisation funds flowing for public institutions.

Well known for its constant strikes, ASUU’s National Executive Council held a weekend meeting to review the progress of their talks with the government. Coming out of this meeting, the union seems to be satisfied with the sincerity shown by the Federal Government, and the arrangements made, especially for the payment of withheld salaries and allocation of funds for university infrastructure.

According to a senior member of ASUU, the suspension is more than likely to be announced on Monday, October 20th, 2025, after a final round of consultation with the union’s members in various universities. The suspension is seen as a way to prevent a full scale indefinite strike which was threatened by the union. Students and their parents are no doubt breathing a sigh of relief, but, ASUU won’t hesitate to resume the strike if the government doesn’t deliver on its promises. The union remains optimistic that sustained dialogue with the government will lead to lasting solutions for the benefit of students, lecturers, and the broader academic community.
