Starring: Jon Bernthal, Deborah Ann Woll, Jason R. Moore, Judith Light, Kelli Barrett

The Punisher: One Last Kill is a weird movie because it’s only 51 minutes long. That’s basically a really long TV episode. But somehow, Jon Bernthal and the filmmakers made it work as a theatrical release, and honestly, it’s one of the best things Marvel has put out in years.

Frank Castle is tired. That’s the whole vibe from the opening scene. He’s been killing bad guys for so long that he’s forgotten why he even started. He’s living off the grid, doing odd jobs, trying to convince himself that the war is over. But then something happens that drags him back in, and he can’t ignore it. I’m not going to spoil what that is, but it’s personal. It always is with Frank.

What surprised me most is how small this movie is. There’s no huge action set piece every ten minutes. The violence happens, but it’s quick and brutal and then it’s over. The fight scenes feel real, which sounds weird to say about a superhero movie, but Bernthal sells every punch. He’s older now, slower maybe, and you feel that in how he moves. He can’t rely on being the strongest guy in the room anymore.

The cast is great across the board. Deborah Ann Woll returns as Karen and she has maybe ten minutes of screen time, but every second matters. There’s this one conversation between her and Frank in a car that basically sums up their entire relationship and what it means for both of them. Judith Light plays someone connected to Frank’s past and she’s genuinely unsettling without being cartoonish.

My biggest complaint is that the ending feels rushed. The movie builds to this moment where Frank has to make a real choice about who he wants to be, and then it sort of just happens. You can feel the runtime constraint here. Another ten minutes and they could have let that final scene breathe more. It’s not bad, but it’s abrupt.

The soundtrack is mostly quiet. There’s long stretches with no score at all, just ambient sound and dialogue. It works because the movie isn’t trying to manipulate your emotions. It’s just showing you Frank’s life and letting you feel whatever you feel about it.

At 8.6 on TMDB, this movie is getting the love it deserves. It’s not a typical action movie where the hero saves the day. It’s about a guy who’s been broken for so long that he doesn’t know how to be anything else. Bernthal finally gets to show the weight of all those years of killing. This isn’t him punishing criminals. This is him trying to figure out if there’s anything left of Frank Castle when the Punisher is gone.

Yeah, it’s short. But it’s packed with actual character work and moments that stick with you. If you’ve been disappointed by Marvel’s recent output, this is worth your time.

The Verdict

One Last Kill is the most mature thing Marvel has made in a long time. It doesn’t have all the answers, but it asks the right questions. Definitely worth watching.

What did you think of it? Did the short runtime bother you, or did you think it worked in the movie’s favor?
