Starring: Ignacy Liss, Maria Sobocińska, Kamil Studnicki, Maja Ostaszewska

I just finished binging Proud and honestly? I’m still sitting with it. This is one of those shows that sneaks up on you because it starts in one place and ends somewhere completely different. I went in expecting a shallow drama about a pretty boy learning a lesson, and instead got something that actually made me think about who we are when everything falls apart.

The TMDB rating of 0/10 is laughable, by the way. I don’t know what happened there, but this show is way better than that score suggests. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely worth your time if you like character-driven stories that aren’t afraid to make their main character deeply unlikeable.

Season 1

So Filip is exactly what the description says. He’s gorgeous, he’s a model, and he knows it. He walks through the world like he owns it. The opening episodes show him being selfish in all the small ways that pretty, young people can get away with. He’s dismissive, he’s flaky, he’s thinking only about himself and his next party or hookup.

Then something really tragic happens to his family. I don’t want to spoil what it is, but it’s the kind of thing that doesn’t give you time to prepare. One episode he’s being an ass at a family dinner, and the next everything changes.

What works about this season is that it doesn’t suddenly make Filip a good person. He doesn’t have an instant epiphany in episode 3 and spend the rest of the season learning valuable lessons. Instead, he has to sit with grief and guilt at the same time, and he doesn’t really know how to do either of those things. He’s still selfish. He still doesn’t know how to ask for help. But now the stakes are higher.

Ignacy Liss carries this entire show. He’s magnetic and annoying in equal measure, which is exactly what Filip needs to be. You want to shake him and also understand him. Maria Sobocińska plays a family member dealing with the fallout, and her scenes with Liss are where the show really hits hard. There’s so much unsaid between them. So much that needs to be said but isn’t.

The eight episodes move at a good pace. It doesn’t feel padded, and it doesn’t feel rushed. By the end of the season, you see real cracks in Filip’s armor, but he’s not fixed. He’s just starting to realize he might need to be.

My only complaint is that some of the supporting characters feel a little thin. They’re there to react to Filip’s crisis rather than have their own full lives, which is understandable given the scope of the show, but it means certain relationships don’t land as hard as they could.

If they bring this back for season 2, I’m genuinely curious to see where they take it. Does Filip actually change? Can he? Or does he just keep falling? Have you watched this yet, or is it on your list?
