Rating: 9/10 | Genre: Documentary | Seasons: 1 | Episodes: 4 | Status: Returning Series
Look, I went into this expecting a quick behind-the-scenes fluff piece about the upcoming Mandalorian movie. You know, the kind of thing Disney throws together to hype up a theatrical release. And honestly? It’s way better than it had any right to be. This four-episode documentary actually gave me real insight into what went into making this thing, and I came away genuinely excited for the film.
The show doesn’t feel like corporate propaganda, which is the biggest surprise here. There’s actual substance to it. You get a sense of the creative process and the passion people have for these characters. It’s not just talking heads saying “this movie is amazing.” It feels like people actually care about what they’re doing.
Season 1
The first episode sets the stage with the special look itself. It’s your typical “what to expect from the movie” setup, but it’s done well. You see some footage from the film, some snippets of what’s to come. It’s enough to get you hyped without spoiling the story. The pacing is good. Nothing drags.
Episode two is called “Creaturette” and it’s my favorite of the bunch. It’s all about the creature design and the practical effects work that goes into bringing Grogu and other creatures to life. If you’ve ever wondered how they actually make these things move on set, this episode is gold. The behind-the-scenes footage is genuinely interesting. You see the level of detail that goes into creatures that are sometimes on screen for just a few seconds.
Episode three, “Grogu Joins the Conversation,” is where they talk about the character development and what fans can expect from Grogu in the movie. It’s less flashy than the creature episode but it works. They talk about the character arc and why Grogu matters to the story. It’s not deep analysis or anything, but it’s enough to make you care.
The fourth episode wraps things up and honestly, I wish there had been more. Not in a bad way. I just wanted to keep watching. That’s how you know something works.
The cast is made up of directors, producers, and crew members. Pedro Pascal doesn’t show up much, which is a little disappointing, but the people who do appear are genuinely interesting to listen to. They talk about the work in a way that feels authentic, not rehearsed.
If you’re already a Mandalorian fan, you absolutely need to watch this before the movie drops. It adds real context and makes you appreciate the work that went into it. Even if you’re just casually interested in Star Wars, it’s worth your time. It’s only four episodes. You can knock it out in an afternoon.
The only real complaint I have is that it’s short. I know that sounds weird to complain about, but I genuinely wanted more. More of the creature design stuff. More behind-the-scenes footage. More conversations with the cast and crew. The documentary scratches an itch but doesn’t fully satisfy it.
Are you planning to watch this before the movie comes out, or are you going in cold?
