Jack Ryan is back, and honestly, this one’s worth your time. Ghost War picks up after Ryan’s tried to leave the spy game behind, but of course that never works out. A covert operation goes sideways, bodies pile up, and he finds himself chasing down a rogue black-ops unit that’s way more dangerous than anyone realized. It’s the kind of plot that could feel tired if they didn’t execute it this well.
John Krasinski is still great in this role. I know some people weren’t sure about him when he first took over, but he’s grown into it. He plays Ryan as this smart guy who’s genuinely exhausted by violence rather than some action hero who loves the thrill. There’s a scene about halfway through where he’s interrogating someone, and you can see the weight of everything he’s done just sitting on his face. That’s good acting.
Sienna Miller shows up as someone on the inside of the conspiracy, and the dynamic between her and Ryan crackles. There’s real tension there, not just the manufactured kind. Wendell Pierce and Michael Kelly are solid in their supporting roles. Pierce especially has some great moments where he’s trying to hold Ryan back from doing something stupid. The cast knows what movie they’re in.
The pacing is tight. 105 minutes flies by. Director keeps things moving without making it feel rushed. There’s a set piece in the middle involving a cargo ship that’s genuinely tense. No shaky cam nonsense. You can actually see what’s happening, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how many action movies forget that.
Where it stumbles is the script in the third act. The final reveal about who’s really running the black-ops unit is pretty predictable if you’re paying attention. I called it about thirty minutes out. The ending also wraps up a little too neatly for a movie that spent most of its runtime showing how messy espionage actually is. It feels like they got nervous about leaving threads hanging.
The soundtrack is forgettable, which isn’t a complaint really, just an observation. It does its job and gets out of the way. Nothing memorable, but nothing distracting either.
Look, this is a solid thriller that doesn’t insult your intelligence but doesn’t exactly break new ground either. It’s the kind of movie that works in theaters, especially if you like Ryan as a character. It’s better than the last few entries in the franchise, and it actually makes me curious what they do next instead of dreading it. If you’ve got two hours and want something well-made that moves fast, Ghost War delivers.
Have you been keeping up with the Ryan movies, or did you jump in with this one?
