So I just finished Wonder Wall and honestly? I’m kind of torn on this one. It’s got an interesting premise that pulled me in right away, but the execution is messy in a way that made me wonder if the show knew what it wanted to be. The 0/10 on TMDB is brutal, but I don’t think it’s quite that bad. It’s more like a show that had potential and then tripped over its own feet.
The basic concept is solid though. A couple finds this massive mansion and discovers there’s serious money hidden inside. That’s the kind of hook that gets you watching. And for the first few episodes, it actually works. You’re genuinely curious about what’s going on and whether these people are going to keep their newfound wealth or if it all falls apart. The cast seems invested in it too.
Season 1
Okay so Season 1 only has three episodes that are actually out, which is wild. The show premiered with just one episode, then dropped two more. It’s only supposed to be eight episodes total for the whole season, so we’re basically a third of the way through.
The first episode sets everything up. Our couple moves into this mansion on what seems like total luck, and they start finding money. The tone is kind of light at first. Like, they can’t believe their luck. They’re nervous but also excited. Then things start to get weird. People show up asking about the house. Someone seems to know about the money. And suddenly you’re like, oh wait, is this actually dangerous?
That’s where the show loses me a little bit. The shift from “yay we’re rich” to “oh no something’s wrong” happens pretty fast and doesn’t feel earned. The second and third episodes introduce these complications but they feel rushed. There’s a crime element that keeps getting hinted at, but it’s not clear if this money came from something illegal or if someone’s after them because of the money or what. It’s murky in a way that doesn’t feel intentional.
Ren Suxi and Guo Jingfei are the leads and they’re likeable enough. Ren Suxi especially carries the emotional weight of not knowing whether to trust his luck or be paranoid about it. Guo Jingfei is good at playing the slightly more grounded partner who wants to just enjoy this, but you can see the cracks forming. They have decent chemistry at least. The supporting cast hasn’t had much to do yet with only three episodes out, but Jason Koo and Qi Yuchen show up in ways that feel ominous. Chi Peng hasn’t really registered for me yet.
Here’s the thing though. Three episodes is barely enough to judge a show on. We’re just getting started. The premise is there. The cast is there. But the writing in these first three episodes is clunky. Scenes feel awkwardly paced. The mystery isn’t mystery enough. It’s just vague. I’m hoping the next batch of episodes tighten things up because right now it feels like a show trying really hard to build tension but not quite nailing it.
I’m going to keep watching because I want to know what happens with this money and whether it’s actually cursed or if these people just brought their own problems with them. But I went in excited and now I’m more cautiously interested. The show needed to grab me harder in these early episodes and it just kind of… didn’t.
Have you started Wonder Wall yet, or are you waiting to see if it gets better once more episodes drop?
