I went into Ashes to Crown expecting another solid Chinese historical drama. What I got was something that actually surprised me. This show is the real deal. It’s smart, it moves at a great pace, and it doesn’t waste your time with unnecessary filler. The 8/10 rating on TMDB feels about right, honestly maybe even a little conservative.
The core premise is pretty straightforward but executed really well. You’ve got Chu Zhao, the general’s daughter, who’s basically being used as a political chess piece. Instead of accepting that, she fights back. Hard. And in doing so, she helps get the actual rightful heir to the throne and basically ruins the plans of this guy Xiao Xun who was about to take over. But here’s where it gets interesting: winning that battle is just the beginning. The real meat of the show is what happens after.
Season 1
So Season 1 is 24 episodes, and I binged it in like four days. I’m not exaggerating when I say this show does not have dead weight. Every episode feels like it matters. The first chunk of episodes is all about the power struggle and Chu Zhao basically saying no to being a sacrifice. You get this perfect blend of court intrigue, action sequences, and genuine character moments. It doesn’t feel bloated.
The second half shifts gears. You’re dealing with a new emperor, foreign threats, internal conflicts, and Chu Zhao trying to figure out how to actually lead people without getting them all killed. There’s a lot more strategic thinking and less of the “rebel against the system” energy. Some people might find that slower, but I thought it was where the show really proved it had something to say.
What works best is how the show handles the stakes. It doesn’t feel like everything is automatically going to work out. There are real consequences. People die. Plans fail. Chu Zhao makes mistakes and has to deal with them. The romance subplot with Xie Yanlai never feels forced either, which is saying something for this type of show.
The pacing is honestly one of my favorite things about it. A lot of historical dramas can drag, especially in the middle section. This one keeps moving. You always feel like something is happening, whether that’s big battle scenes or quieter court politics.
The cast is really solid across the board. Chen Duling carries the show as Chu Zhao, and she makes the character feel like an actual person with a brain instead of just a pretty face doing action scenes. Zhou Yiran as Xie Yanlai has great chemistry with her. Their dynamic is actually one of the best parts of the show. You believe they’re partners, not just love interests. The supporting cast fills out the world without feeling like filler either.
If I had to nitpick, there are a few moments where the dialogue feels a little stiff, probably a translation thing. And there’s one subplot involving a rival general that goes on maybe a little longer than it needs to. But honestly, those are small complaints about an otherwise really well put together show.
The fact that this is coming back for another season makes sense. There’s still stuff to explore. The realm is still not stable. There are still threats. And I genuinely want to see where Chu Zhao’s story goes next. For a show to make you actually care about that after 24 episodes says a lot.
If you like historical dramas but want something that doesn’t test your patience, or if you just like good storytelling with decent action and smart characters, this is worth your time. It’s not perfect, but it’s really good. Have you had a chance to watch this yet, or is it still on your list?
