Okay, so I just finished binging Rooster Fighter and I’m genuinely surprised by how much fun this show is. When I first heard the premise, I thought it was going to be one of those ridiculous anime concepts that’s funny for five minutes and then gets old. But it actually works. Like, really works. This is a 12-episode season that left me wanting more, which honestly doesn’t happen as often as it should.
The show takes itself just seriously enough while still being completely absurd about its core concept. A rooster fighting giant demons. That’s it. That’s the show. And somehow it’s genuinely entertaining from start to finish.
Season 1
Season 1 follows Keiji, our heroic rooster, as he wanders into a new city and immediately gets caught up in monster-fighting action. The first episode jumps right into it, which I appreciated. No long setup, no boring backstory dump. Demon shows up, Keiji fights it. You know what you’re getting.
The early episodes are really strong. “A Rooster Among Cranes” sets the tone perfectly. “The Caged Bird” takes things a step further by introducing Piyoko and her father, which gives Keiji an actual emotional anchor. Before this point, I was wondering if the show would just be action beat after action beat with no real character development. But that episode showed me the writers actually cared about the people in this world.
“The Parable of the Three Birds” brings in Elizabeth and starts hinting at a bigger mythology with the White Demon. This is where I realized the show had more going on beneath the surface than I expected. There’s actual lore here. There’s history. It’s not just random fights.
The middle episodes keep the momentum going. Some of the standalone demon fights are forgettable, which is the show’s main weakness. You get a few episodes where it feels like they’re just going through the motions, introducing a demon, Keiji fights it, problem solved. But these episodes don’t drag on forever, and the show bounces back quickly.
What really carries this season is the dynamic between Keiji and the human characters. Kenta Miyake does great voice work as Keiji. He gives the rooster real personality. I was worried the character would just be a gimmick, but there’s actual depth there. His battle cry isn’t just silly, it’s earned. When he yells “Kokekokko,” it means something by the end of the season.
Mariko Honda as Piyoko is probably the emotional heart of the show. She could have been annoying, but instead she becomes the reason you actually care about what happens. Her relationship with Keiji develops naturally, and by the end of the season you’re invested in both of them.
The final few episodes really come together and make the whole season feel worthwhile. Without spoiling anything, the White Demon stuff pays off in a way that makes you want season two immediately. The last episode ends on a note that feels conclusive enough to stand on its own, but also clearly sets up what’s coming next. Smart writing.
This is a show that shouldn’t work but absolutely does. It’s funny without being a comedy. It’s action-packed without being mindless. And it’s got heart, which is something I really wasn’t expecting from a series about a rooster fighting giant demons. If you’re on the fence about it, give the first episode a shot. If the premise doesn’t completely turn you off by minute five, you’re probably going to enjoy the whole thing. Have you watched it yet, or does the whole concept still seem too ridiculous to bother with?
