Starring: Ella Hunt, Avantika, Will Angus, Jack Martin, Nicholas Duvernay

I went into “Not Suitable for Work” expecting the usual millennial Manhattan comedy setup, and honestly, that’s pretty much what I got. But here’s the thing: it works. It’s a comfort watch that doesn’t try too hard, and after a week of heavy shows, that felt pretty good.

The show knows exactly what it is. Five broke twenty-somethings living in Murray Hill, obsessed with their jobs, complaining about their love lives. It’s been done before. But the cast has enough charm that you don’t really mind watching the familiar beats play out.

Season 1

The season opens with the setup you’d expect: two women living across the hall from three guys. Ella Hunt and Avantika are the main focus on one side, and Will Angus, Jack Martin, and Nicholas Duvernay handle the other side. The pilot does what it’s supposed to do. It establishes who these people are and why they’re interesting enough to follow for ten episodes.

Episode two introduces what becomes a running joke about one character getting treated badly at work because he didn’t get his job through family connections. It’s not subtle, but it lands. The show isn’t trying to be clever about class stuff. It just says it out loud, and sometimes that works better.

By episode three, the show settles into its rhythm. There’s a whole thing about whether someone should go to a date or a dinner party. Sounds small, and it is, but that’s kind of the appeal. These characters care about dumb things, and the show cares about them caring about dumb things.

The back half of the season keeps the energy steady. Nothing shocking happens. Nobody has a shocking character revelation. But that’s fine. You’re just hanging out with these people while they navigate their jobs and their relationships and their tiny apartments.

Ella Hunt carries a lot of the show, and she’s good at making you root for her even when she’s being selfish. Avantika has good chemistry with her, and their dynamic is the heart of things. On the guy side, Will Angus gets some of the best material, especially when dealing with the whole nepo baby storyline.

The main issue with season one is that it plays things pretty safe. There are no real stakes. Nobody learns much. By episode ten, everyone’s basically where they started. That’s not always a bad thing for a comedy, but it can feel a little hollow if you’re looking for actual growth.

Is “Not Suitable for Work” breaking new ground? No. Is it clever or sharp or saying anything you haven’t heard before? Also no. But it’s a solid ten episodes of sitcom comfort food. The cast is likeable, the jokes land enough, and there’s nothing here that felt like a waste of time. It’s the kind of show that’s perfect for background watching or a lazy weekend binge.

If you’re sick of prestige TV and just want something light and fun without a lot of thinking required, this one’s worth a shot. Just don’t go in expecting it to blow your mind. Have you been watching this one, or is it still sitting in your watchlist?
