Rating: 0/10 | Genre: Action & Adventure, Mystery | Seasons: 1 | Episodes: 36 | Status: Returning Series

Starring: Zhang Xincheng, Ding Yuxi, Jiang Peiyao, Fu Dalong, Liu Lingzi

I just finished binging all 36 episodes of Archives: The Nanyang Mystery and I have some mixed feelings about this one. It’s the kind of show that grabbed me immediately but then started to lose steam around the middle. Still, I can’t say it was a waste of time. There’s enough here to keep you hooked for a weekend binge, just don’t expect it to blow your mind.

The premise is solid. A murder on a ship called the Nan’an during the early Republic of China period. Two investigators, Zhang Haiyan and his partner, start pulling at threads and suddenly they’re in way over their heads. There’s a conspiracy. There’s betrayal. People are dying. It’s the kind of setup that should work really well, and for the first chunk of the season, it absolutely does.

Season 1

Okay, so season one is all we’ve got right now, but it’s a chunky 36 episodes. That’s a lot of content to work through. The early episodes are genuinely great. The mystery unfolds at a good pace. You’re introduced to this murky world of political intrigue and shady dealings on the high seas. The ship becomes this claustrophobic pressure cooker where you don’t know who to trust.

Zhang Xincheng carries most of the weight as Zhang Haiyan. He’s got good intensity and he plays the frustrated detective well. Ding Yuxi is solid as the partner, though his character doesn’t get as much to do as I would have liked. The chemistry between them is fine, but it’s not what makes you stick around. You’re here for the mystery, not the buddy cop dynamic.

The problem is that somewhere around episode 20 or so, the show starts spinning its wheels. The conspiracy gets bigger and more convoluted, but it also gets less interesting. There are only so many times you can have a character discover a clue that leads to another clue that leads to another question before it starts feeling repetitive. The pacing gets sluggish. Some episodes feel like filler.

Jiang Peiyao plays one of the more interesting characters, someone caught in the middle of everything with their own secrets to hide. That part works. Fu Dalong and Liu Lingzi are fine in supporting roles, but honestly by the later episodes I was having trouble keeping track of who was on which side of things. Maybe that’s intentional, but it didn’t feel clever so much as it felt messy.

The last few episodes pick things back up a little bit. There’s actually a decent payoff to some of the questions that have been building throughout the season. Not everything is answered, which is clearly setting things up for season two. Some of it feels earned. Some of it feels like they were just wrapping things up because they needed to get to the end.

If you like mysteries and you’ve got the time, Archives: The Nanyang Mystery is worth checking out. Just go in knowing that it’s not perfect. The first third is really good, the middle drags, and the final stretch finds its footing again. It’s not the kind of show that’s going to change your life, but it’s solid entertainment if you’re looking for something to work through. I’m curious to see where season two goes, though I won’t lie and say I’m dying for it.
