I just finished binging The Boroughs and honestly? I’m kind of torn. It’s a show that feels like it’s trying really hard to be something special, and there are moments where it actually gets there. But then it stumbles, and you’re left wondering if you should keep investing your time.
Here’s the thing though. It’s not bad. It’s just… uneven. Like, you can tell there’s real potential here, but the execution doesn’t always match the ambition. The premise alone had me hooked from the trailer. A retirement community that’s secretly nightmare fuel? A bunch of older folks becoming unlikely heroes? That’s genuinely cool. But the show takes a while to figure out how to tell that story properly.
Season 1
The first episode is honestly the strongest thing The Boroughs has going for it. We meet our main character, a grieving man named Frank who just moved into this picturesque retirement community to get away from his pain. Everything seems idyllic. Too idyllic. Then something happens that shatters that illusion. No spoilers, but let’s just say Frank encounters something that shouldn’t exist.
What works in these early episodes is the atmosphere. The show nails the creepy undertone of a place that looks perfect but feels wrong. The production design is great. The community actually looks like a place you’d want to retire to, which makes the darkness underneath hit harder.
The cast is honestly the show’s saving grace. Alfred Molina carries the weight of Frank’s grief without overdoing it. Geena Davis is fantastic as this no-nonsense woman who becomes Frank’s unlikely ally. Alfre Woodard brings real warmth to her scenes. Denis O’Hare gets the meatiest supporting role and chews through it like he’s having a blast. Clarke Peters rounds out the crew as the guy who knows more than he’s letting on.
But here’s where things get shaky. Around episode 4 or 5, the pacing completely falls apart. The plot that seemed so tight in those first three episodes just kind of meanders. We get some clunky exposition dumps. A few character moments that feel forced. The mystery at the heart of the story gets muddled instead of deepening.
The monster design is cool, by the way. Genuinely unsettling. But the show doesn’t use it enough. It feels like they’re saving budget or something, because you barely see the creature for most of the season.
The finale does pick things back up. Episode 8 actually delivers on the promise of the first episode. There’s action. Character moments land. It sets up what could be an interesting direction for season 2. But you have to slog through some pretty dull middle episodes to get there, and not everyone’s going to have the patience for that.
The Boroughs is a show that needed tighter editing. Eight episodes felt like it should have been five or six really good ones. As it stands, it’s worth watching if you like this kind of genre mashup and you’re willing to give it some grace while it figures itself out. But don’t go in expecting anything revolutionary. Just go in expecting a bunch of great actors doing their best with a story that’s still trying to find its footing.
Are you planning to check it out, or does the uneven pacing scare you off?
