I just finished Born with Luck and honestly? I’m surprised at how much fun I had with this one. It’s not groundbreaking television, but it knows exactly what it is. A crime drama that doesn’t take itself too seriously, mixed with comedy that actually lands most of the time. The 8.1 rating seems about right. It’s the kind of show that grabs you for a weekend binge and doesn’t overstay its welcome.

The premise is simple: tough detective gets sent to a corrupt city, bumps into a group of incompetent thieves, and somehow they all end up solving a major crime together. It’s formula stuff, but the execution is what makes it work. The show balances the serious investigation stuff with genuinely funny moments from the thieves screwing things up. It’s a tonal mix that could’ve been a disaster, but it pulls it off.

Season 1

So the whole season is 24 episodes, which is a solid length. Not too long, not rushed. Zhang Yi’ang, our main character, gets stationed in Sanjiangkou to look into some murders. The city’s basically a mess of corruption and organized crime. He’s the straight man in a chaotic situation, and Wang Xiao plays him with this world-weary vibe that works perfectly.

The thieves show up pretty early. They’re trying to pull off some heist that goes completely sideways, and they end up accidentally helping Zhang with his investigation. Instead of arresting them, he basically blackmails them into helping him. It’s a fun dynamic that keeps the show moving. You’ve got Tian Xiwei and Wang Chuanjun in the cast, and they handle the comic relief without making it unbearable.

The mystery itself is solid. There’s a real murder to solve, real stakes, and actual tension alongside the comedy. The show doesn’t sacrifice the crime plot for laughs. It layers them together. Early episodes set up the corruption angle really well. By the midpoint, you’re genuinely invested in what happened and who’s behind it all.

The second half of the season picks up the pace. The investigation gets messier. The thieves become more useful even though they’re still disasters. There are some twists that don’t come out of nowhere, which is refreshing. They build toward them. The final stretch has real momentum. It wraps up the main murder case while leaving room for more, but it also feels like a natural ending point.

My only complaint is that some supporting characters get lost in the shuffle. There are corrupt cops and crime bosses introduced early that kind of fade into the background. A few plot threads feel like they’re set up and then abandoned. Nothing major, but it’s noticeable if you’re paying attention.

Wang Xiao carries this show. He’s got the kind of face that works for a tired detective who’s seen everything. His chemistry with the thief characters is the heart of it. When they’re together, the show zings. The scenes where he’s just doing straight detective work are fine, but they’re not as interesting. Tian Xiwei and Wang Chuanjun are likable goofballs. They could’ve been annoying, but they have timing and charm.

The comedy genuinely surprised me. It’s not laugh-out-loud funny every scene, but there are moments that hit. The show trusts the audience enough to let scenes breathe and build to jokes instead of spelling everything out. That’s harder to pull off than it seems.

If you like crime shows but don’t want something heavy and dark all the time, this is perfect. It’s got stakes and mystery, but it remembers to be fun. The fact that it ends after one season is actually smart. It tells its story and gets out. No overstaying its welcome, no grasping for a second season nobody asked for.

Have you watched “Born with Luck” yet, or is it on your list? I’m curious if the comedy lands the same way for everyone or if I just got lucky with the vibe.
