I just finished binging all 19 seasons of Criminal Minds and honestly? I get why this show has such a devoted following. It’s not perfect, but it’s weirdly addictive. The formula is pretty simple: FBI profilers hunt serial killers, they figure out the killer’s psychology, they catch the bad guy. Repeat 364 times. But somehow it works, especially when you have a solid cast and decent writing behind it.
The show knows what it is and doesn’t apologize for it. It’s comfort food TV for people who like crime dramas. You’re not going to get mind-bending plot twists or high art here. What you get is a team of likeable characters solving interesting cases, with just enough character development to keep you invested across multiple seasons.
Season 1
The first season is rough around the edges, but it sets up what works about Criminal Minds. We meet the core team: Gideon, Morgan, Reid, Prentiss, and JJ. The cases are creepy and the profiling stuff is genuinely interesting. Sure, the dialogue can be clunky and some of the tech stuff looks hilariously dated now, but it hooks you. By the end of the season, you’re invested in these characters and you want to see where this goes.
Seasons 2-3
These seasons are when Criminal Minds finds its rhythm. The Fisher King two-parter is a standout, and the show starts getting comfortable playing with longer story arcs. The cases get darker and more creative. Mandy Patinkin’s Gideon is at his best here, all world-weary and intense. The show is still relatively grounded, which makes the criminal profiles feel more realistic.
Seasons 4-5
This is when I’d say the show hits peak form. The opener of season 4 with the SUV explosion is a genuinely shocking moment. The team feels like a family now. The cases are engaging, the character work is solid, and you actually care about what happens to these people. Hotch is dealing with real trauma, Reid is becoming a more complex character, and the ensemble just clicks. These are binge-friendly seasons where you want to keep watching.
Seasons 6-7
Still really good, but you start to notice the formula a bit more. The show is successful now, so there’s more pressure, maybe more network notes. Some episodes feel like they’re going through the motions. But there are still standout cases and the character dynamics keep things interesting. Season 7 especially has some great moments with the team being questioned about their methods. It adds some real stakes.
Seasons 8-10
Here’s where things get a little uneven. The cases are still entertaining, but the shock value starts to wear off. The show tries to keep things fresh by introducing new threats and conspiracy stuff, but sometimes it feels like the writers are just throwing things at the wall. Some episodes are great. Others feel forgettable. You’re still watching, but maybe not as intensely as before.
Season 11
This season marks a transition. Shemar Moore’s Morgan leaves, and while I respect the character’s exit, it’s definitely the end of an era. The team restructures and brings in new blood. It’s a rough transition because Morgan was such a core part of the show’s DNA for so long. The season itself is fine, but it feels like the show is figuring out what it is without one of its pillars.
Season 12
Adam Rodriguez joins as Luke Alvez and honestly, he does a solid job. He brings energy and a different kind of intensity. Emily Prentiss comes back which is great because she’s always been underrated on this show. The season is uneven though. Some cases are forgettable. The team dynamic takes time to gel with the new lineup. It’s not bad, just feels like the show is in a transition period.
Seasons 13-15
Criminal Minds starts to feel less like a procedural and more like a show that’s spinning its wheels. The cases are still decent, but they blend together. You’ve seen variations of these killers a dozen times. The show tries to inject drama with bigger storylines and character stuff, but it doesn’t always land. Season 14 is notably short at 15 episodes, which might’ve been a sign that the network wasn’t sure about the show anymore. By season 15, you can tell the writers are running out of fresh ideas.
Seasons 16-17
The pandemic happened and the show adapted. Season 16 introduces this big villain network thing that’s honestly pretty convoluted. It feels like the writers are trying to create a Game of Thrones style arc for Criminal Minds, which doesn’t really fit the show’s DNA. The cases feel secondary to the larger conspiracy plot, and it doesn’t work as well as the episodic structure did. Some people probably loved it, but I found it exhausting.
Seasons 18-19
These final seasons are… complicated. The show is clearly trying to build toward something with the whole Sicarius network thing. There are some interesting moments and the action picks up, but honestly, by this point I was watching more out of obligation than genuine excitement. The cases aren’t as inventive and the character moments feel rushed. The show went from being appointment TV to something I’d watch while scrolling my phone.
Let’s talk about the characters because that’s really what carries this show. Joe Mantegna as Rossi is a rock. He brings a gravitas to the team and his episodes often hit hardest because he’s so understated. Paget Brewster’s Prentiss is the heart of the show, especially in later seasons. Adam Rodriguez is charming as Luke. Kirsten Vangsness as Garcia is… look, she’s great for three seasons and then her character becomes way too much. A.J. Cook as JJ is solid throughout. And Matthew Gray Gubler as Reid could carry an entire show on his own. His character development across 19 seasons is actually really good.
The show’s biggest weakness is that it stays on the air too long. Criminal Minds probably should’ve ended after season 15. It had a good run, told its story, and the characters had real arcs. Instead, it limps into seasons 16-19 searching for relevance. The formula that made the show work in seasons 4-5 starts to feel tired. You run out of creative ways to present serial killers.
That said, I don’t regret watching all 19 seasons. The show gave me a solid three-year binge that was easy to watch and genuinely entertaining most of the time. If you’re looking for a crime drama that doesn’t require a ton of heavy thinking, where the characters are likeable and the cases are interesting, Criminal Minds delivers. Just maybe stop after season 15 and pretend that’s how it ends. Have you watched Criminal Minds, and if so, where did you bail out or are you a ride-or-die 19-season fan?
