Okay so I just finished binging all four seasons of Invincible and I have a lot to say. This show is legitimately one of the best superhero shows I’ve watched in years. It’s not perfect, but it’s damn close. If you’ve been on the fence about it, do yourself a favor and start watching. Fair warning though: you’re going to get emotionally destroyed multiple times.

The premise is simple enough. Mark Grayson is this normal kid whose dad happens to be Omni-Man, basically Superman but way more brutal. When Mark turns seventeen, his powers kick in and his dad takes him under his wing. Sounds like a standard superhero origin story, right? It’s not. The show goes places I didn’t expect, and it earns its twists instead of just throwing them at you for shock value.

Season 1

Season 1 hooks you immediately. The first episode does a great job of establishing Mark’s world. He’s got a normal life. He goes to school, he’s got a girlfriend named Amber, he hangs out with his best friend William. Then his powers show up and everything changes. His dad starts training him and the show does a smart thing: it lets you believe this is going to be a typical superhero story.

The first season is mostly Mark learning to be a superhero while dealing with actual teenager problems. There’s this nice balance between superhero action and real life stuff. But then the season finale hits you like a truck. Omni-Man does something absolutely unforgivable and the whole show pivots. It’s brutal. It’s shocking. It works perfectly.

Season 1 is honestly the best pacing of the entire series. Eight episodes is the perfect length and the story moves at exactly the right speed. Steven Yeun voices Mark and he’s so good at capturing that mix of arrogance and uncertainty that comes with being a teenage superhero.

Season 2

After that ending, Mark has to deal with the fallout. His dad is gone. He’s angry. He feels betrayed. This season is about him trying to pick up the pieces while also dealing with new threats. The thing about season 2 is that it gets weird sometimes in ways that don’t always work.

There’s this episode title that’s hilariously long and it involves some strange stuff that feels out of place with the rest of the show’s tone. Not all the humor lands. Some of it feels forced. But when the show focuses on Mark’s emotional journey, it’s excellent. J.K. Simmons as Omni-Man is incredible. The voice acting across the board is top tier.

Season 2 also introduces Oliver and he becomes really important later. The season does some good character work but it also feels like it’s spinning its wheels a bit. It’s not as tight as season 1. Some plot threads feel like they’re just there to kill time. That said, when it hits, it hits hard. Mark’s relationship with his mom becomes a much bigger part of the story and Sandra Oh is perfect in that role.

Season 3

Now this is where the show gets really interesting. Mark is going through a major shift. He’s not the same kid from season 1. He’s angrier, more willing to cross lines, more willing to do whatever it takes to protect people he cares about. The show is basically asking whether he’s becoming his father, and it’s a hell of a question.

Season 3 is probably the darkest the show gets. The stakes feel higher. The threats feel more real. There’s a sense that anyone could die and the show has already proven it’s willing to let main characters get seriously hurt. The character work here is strong. Mark’s arc is compelling because you actually believe he could turn into a villain if he’s not careful.

This season also does more with Oliver and it pays off because the show actually developed him properly in season 2. That’s good writing right there. The show respects your time. It doesn’t forget about characters or just drop plot threads.

Season 4

The most recent season is good but it feels a little like the show is catching its breath. There’s this massive world-changing event that happened in season 3 and season 4 deals with the aftermath. It’s more introspective than the others. Mark is dealing with guilt. He’s trying to figure out who he is now.

Honestly season 4 is the weakest of the bunch, but it’s only weak compared to the other seasons. It’s still better than most superhero shows out there. The problem is that after the intensity of season 3, season 4 feels like a step down in terms of action and stakes. Some of the episode pacing feels off. You can tell the show is setting up for whatever comes next, but it doesn’t always make the journey feel urgent.

That said, the character moments are still great. The show continues to do solid work with its cast. And there’s definitely stuff happening that matters. It’s just a little slower than the previous seasons.

The cast really is the heart of this show. Steven Yeun carries everything as Mark. The dude brings so much to the performance. You believe his rage, his exhaustion, his determination. J.K. Simmons steals every scene he’s in as Omni-Man. Sandra Oh brings real weight to Debbie’s struggle with grief and trauma. The supporting cast is strong too. Nobody feels like they’re phoning it in.

Here’s the thing though: this show is violent. Like really violent. If you’re squeamish, be prepared. The fights get messy. People get hurt in ways that are hard to watch. But it’s not gratuitous. It serves the story. The show is trying to show you what it actually costs to be a superhero. It’s not pretty.

I’m really curious to see where season 5 takes things. The show has earned enough goodwill with me that I’m excited to see how it wraps up. Whether you’re a superhero fan or not, Invincible is worth your time. It’s smart, it’s well-made, and it actually respects your intelligence. Have you watched it yet, or are you still thinking about giving it a shot?
