I just finished all eight seasons of Outlander and honestly? I’m exhausted. Not in a bad way, but in that way where you’ve been emotionally invested in something for like a month straight and you need to sit with it for a bit. The show is genuinely good, especially early on, but it’s also a lot. It’s messy and sometimes it doesn’t work, but when it does, it really does.
The premise alone is wild enough to pull you in. A World War 2 nurse accidentally travels back to 1743 Scotland and falls in love with a Scottish warrior while also being married to a guy in the future. It’s ridiculous on paper, but the show makes you care. It actually makes you understand why Claire is torn between these two men and two worlds. That’s harder to pull off than it sounds.
Season 1
Season 1 is the best the show ever is, and I mean that as a compliment. They introduce Claire, she finds the time portal through some magic rocks, and suddenly she’s in 1743 Scotland running for her life. The show doesn’t waste time. By episode 2 she’s meeting the Laird and by episode 3 she’s realizing she might not get home.
What works in this season is the mystery and the chemistry. You don’t know what’s going on any more than Claire does. Is she crazy? Is it real? And then she meets Jamie Fraser and everything changes. Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe have genuine chemistry. It’s not forced or awkward. You believe they fall for each other hard and fast, even though she’s married to another man.
The show also actually respects the time period and the danger. Claire isn’t suddenly a badass warrior. She’s a nurse from 1945 trying to survive in a world where she doesn’t belong. She uses her brain and her medical knowledge to get through. That made her feel real in a way a lot of time travel stories don’t bother with.
16 episodes is a lot for a first season, but it doesn’t feel bloated. The show earns its runtime by making you care about the world and the characters.
Season 2
Season 2 moves them to Paris and the story shifts from survival to intrigue. They’re trying to stop the Battle of Culloden from happening, which means dealing with French royalty and politics. It’s ambitious and sometimes it works.
The problem is that Paris feels slower than Scotland did. There are subplots that drag and episodes that feel like filler. The show tried to do a lot here and not all of it landed. Some of the political stuff is genuinely interesting, but then you get stuck in sequences that just mark time.
The emotional core is still there though. Watching Jamie and Claire navigate their marriage while dealing with the weight of trying to change history is great. And the season ends on a gut punch that changes everything for the rest of the show. I won’t spoil it, but it’s earned and brutal.
Season 3
This season is split between two timelines and honestly, it’s where the show starts to show some cracks. Claire is back in 1948 with her daughter and dealing with what it means to be separated from Jamie. Meanwhile we get flashbacks to what happened to Jamie after Culloden.
The flashback stuff is strong. Jamie in a cave hiding from the English, then in prison, is dark and good. But the 1940s stuff feels slower and less interesting. Claire looking for information and dealing with boring life stuff just doesn’t have the same energy as the time period stuff. The season finds its footing again when the two timelines start moving toward each other, but it takes a while to get there.
Season 3 is the longest the show has ever dragged, but it also sets up everything that comes after. So it matters even if it’s not always fun to watch.
Season 4
By season 4 they’re in North Carolina and starting to build a new life in America. This season is actually really solid. It feels fresher than Paris did. They’re building something, dealing with pirates and slavery and colonial politics, and the show feels like it has direction again.
The problem is that the show keeps adding new characters and new storylines and eventually it starts to feel crowded. There’s a lot of plot happening and not always in ways that feel connected or meaningful. Some episodes feel like they’re just checking boxes instead of telling a story.
But the Jamie and Claire relationship is still the heart of everything, and it still works. Even when the plot is messy, they carry it.
Season 5
Season 5 is a step down. The Regulator conflict and all the colonial America stuff feels generic sometimes. There are good episodes in here but also a lot of stuff that just feels like the show spinning its wheels.
The addition of more characters and more family drama helps when it’s good, but it also means we see less of what actually made the show interesting in the first place. By the end of this season you can kind of feel that the show is running out of steam a bit.
Season 6
Only 8 episodes. That should have been a clue about what was coming. This season is short and it feels short. Good things happen but nothing feels fully developed. It’s like the show was treading water before the big finale push.
There are interesting character moments and some good stuff with the family, but as a season it’s forgettable. It exists to set up season 7 more than anything else.
Season 7
Season 7 is 16 episodes and actually feels like the show remembered why people cared. The American Revolution is happening and it affects everything. The stakes feel real again. There’s a shocking moment early on that kicks everything into high gear and the season doesn’t really let up after that.
This season also splits more time between the different characters. Brianna and Roger get a lot more to do, which is good and bad. Their storylines are interesting but sometimes they overshadow Jamie and Claire, and that’s not what people are here for.
Still, season 7 is the best the show has been since the early seasons. It feels like it matters again.
Season 8
The final season is 10 episodes and it feels like the show is winding down but not quite ready to end. There are new neighbors and new conflicts and it all feels a little scattered. The season does big things that will affect the whole series, but it also spends time on stuff that feels less important.
It’s a strange final season because it doesn’t feel final. It feels like it could keep going, or like it’s setting up a story that gets cut short. For a show that has always been uneven when it comes to pacing and plot, that feels about right.
The characters are still good though. Even in the final season, when Jamie and Claire share scenes, they’re compelling. Their relationship has been the backbone of this whole thing and it still is.
Is Outlander worth watching? Yeah, probably. The first season especially is worth your time. The show doesn’t always know what it’s doing with eight seasons and all these characters and storylines, but it mostly works. The lead performances are strong and the core relationship is genuinely interesting to follow across decades and continents. Just know that it’s uneven. Some seasons will grab you and some will make you want to speed through. That’s kind of the whole experience though.
Did you make it through all eight seasons, or did you tap out somewhere? I’m curious if other people stuck with it the whole way or if this is one of those shows where most people peace out around season 4 or 5.
