So I just finished binging all 37 episodes of Zhan Zhao Adventures and honestly? It’s a solid mystery drama that’s worth your time, but don’t expect it to blow your mind. The show sits comfortably in that middle ground where it’s entertaining enough to keep you watching but never quite reaches the level of the best historical mysteries out there. It’s a 6/10 kind of show, and I mean that in the most constructive way possible.
The premise grabbed me immediately. A fourth-ranked imperial guard investigating a cold case on his own is a fun setup. It has that underdog energy, you know? And when he teams up with Miss Huo Linglong and Bai Yutang, the trio dynamic actually works. You can feel the chemistry between them, and watching them go from suspicious strangers to a solid team was genuinely satisfying.
Season 1
Season 1 is 37 episodes long, which is actually pretty hefty for what ends up being one season. The show uses those episodes to build out a world where there’s corruption in both the court and the martial world, and our three protagonists are trying to untangle this mess.
The early episodes are strong. The mystery hooks you fast. There’s a real sense of urgency as Zhan Zhao discovers evidence that shouldn’t exist, and it forces him to go rogue. The introduction of Huo Linglong is where the show finds its groove. Zhang Ruonan brings attitude and smarts to the role, and she’s not just a love interest or a tagalong. She has her own reasons for wanting justice, and that matters.
But here’s the thing. Once you get past the midpoint, the pacing gets weird. There are arcs that feel stretched out. Some episodes could’ve been cut without losing anything important. By episode 25 or so, you start seeing the same patterns repeat. Uncover a clue, chase down a suspect, hit a dead end, discover something bigger is happening. It works the first few times, but by the second half it feels like the show is treading water.
The final stretch does pick up though. Once they get closer to exposing the corruption ring, things get tense again. The reveals are decent, not mind-blowing, but satisfying enough that you feel like the 37-episode investment paid off.
The Cast
Yang Yang as Zhan Zhao is fine. He carries the show without being flashy about it. He’s got that determined, by-the-book detective energy, and he pulls it off. He’s the anchor of the whole thing.
Zhang Ruonan as Huo Linglong steals most of the scenes she’s in. She’s strong-willed without being obnoxious about it, and the show actually gives her things to do. She’s not waiting around for the guys to figure things out. That’s refreshing.
Fang Yilun as Bai Yutang is probably the weakest link in the main trio, but only because the writing for his character is thinner. He’s the justice-driven fighter type, and while that works fine, he doesn’t get as much development as the other two. By the end of the season, you feel like you know Zhan Zhao and Huo Linglong pretty well, but Bai Yutang is still kind of one-note.
Zhang Yuxi and Xiu Qing show up in supporting roles and do solid work, but they’re not in enough episodes to really make an impact.
What Works and What Doesn’t
The mystery itself is interesting enough to keep you guessing. There are a few good twists, and the corruption arc pays off in a way that feels earned. The action scenes are decent too. Nothing fancy, but they get the job done.
Where the show struggles is with filler. Thirty-seven episodes is a lot, and not all of them are necessary. There are side cases that feel obligatory. Sometimes the show gets bogged down in procedural stuff when it should be moving forward with the main plot.
The chemistry between the three leads is probably the show’s biggest strength though. When the focus is on them banter and working together, the show is at its best. When it gets lost in subplot territory, that’s when things drag.
If you’re into historical mysteries and you’ve got time to kill, Zhan Zhao Adventures is worth a shot. Just know that you’re signing up for a show that’s fun but uneven, with a cast that’s mostly likable and a mystery that pays off even if it takes a while to get there. Would you stick with a second season if they announced one, or are you good with just this one?
