I finished “Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed” in two days and I’m still not sure how to feel about it. It’s weird, it’s funny, it’s genuinely dark in ways that sneak up on you, and somehow it all works. This show knows exactly what it is and commits to the bit so hard that you just have to go along for the ride. Is it perfect? No. But it’s the kind of mess that actually entertains you instead of frustrating you.
The premise sounds like a parody of those prestige dramas where suburban moms get caught up in crime. But here’s the thing: it actually commits to the story instead of just winking at the audience the whole time. That’s what makes it land.
Season 1
Paula Sanders is a newly divorced mom who stumbles into an online relationship with a cam boy named Karl. It starts innocent enough, but then everything goes sideways when Karl and his wife Mallory drag her into some genuinely dangerous situations involving blackmail and actual murder. Throw in youth soccer politics and you’ve got the weirdest premise that somehow becomes completely absorbing.
Tatiana Maslany carries this entire show. She plays Paula as someone who’s just trying to figure out her life post-divorce and keeps making decisions that are understandable in the moment but horrible in hindsight. She’s not a genius. She’s not a criminal mastermind. She’s just a woman who got lonely and made bad calls. That’s what makes her interesting to watch.
Jake Johnson as Karl is exactly what you want from that character. He could’ve been a total creep or totally charming, but he’s somehow both at the same time. You never fully trust him, which is the point. Dolly de Leon as Mallory steals basically every scene she’s in. She’s unpredictable and funny and terrifying in equal measure.
The first episode sets the tone perfectly. It’s funny but it’s also a little uncomfortable. By episode two when things escalate, you’re already invested enough to care. The show balances the comedy and the actual stakes really well. There are moments that are genuinely tense before it cuts back to something ridiculous like arguing about soccer schedules.
The season doesn’t drag. Ten episodes felt like the right amount. By the end you’re satisfied but also definitely wanting more. The final episode leaves things open in a way that makes you immediately wonder what season two looks like.
Honestly, if you like shows that don’t take themselves too seriously but still have real consequences, this one’s worth your time. Have you seen it yet, or is this the first you’re hearing about it?
