Okay, so I just finished binging the live-action One Piece show and I have to be honest: it’s way better than I expected it to be. Like, I went in with zero expectations because the reviews are apparently terrible, but this thing actually works. Is it perfect? No. Are there some weird choices? Absolutely. But if you love the anime or just want a fun adventure show, this is totally worth your time.
The show takes the manga’s early story and translates it to live-action in a way that mostly doesn’t feel completely ridiculous. That’s harder than it sounds. They could have made this goofy and unwatchable, but instead they made it charming and genuinely entertaining.
Season 1
Season 1 is where they introduce us to Luffy and his dreams of becoming the Pirate King. Iñaki Godoy plays him and honestly, he nails the vibe. He’s got this goofy, determined energy that makes you root for him even when he’s doing dumb stuff.
The first few episodes set up Luffy meeting Zoro, Nami, and Usopp. We get the whole thing about Nami being forced to work for a villain and needing their help to escape. We see Zoro agree to be Luffy’s swordsman. It’s all pretty straightforward stuff if you know the anime, but even if you don’t, it works fine as an introduction.
What works here is that the show doesn’t take itself too seriously. It knows what it is. The action sequences are solid without being overly flashy. The characters have real chemistry. Mackenyu as Zoro and Emily Rudd as Nami feel like they actually belong together as a crew.
The main weak spot in season 1 is that some of the pacing feels off. They spend a lot of time on certain episodes and then rush through others. By episode 6 or 7 you might feel a little tired, but it picks back up by the finale.
Season 2
Season 2 is where things really open up. They’re heading into the Grand Line, which is this legendary stretch of ocean where all the crazy stuff happens. The Straw Hats are getting in over their heads and you can feel the show getting bigger.
The whale episode is genuinely fun. Yeah, it sounds silly, but it works. The crew dynamics are really strong at this point. You actually care about these people now. Taz Skylar as Sanji fits into the group perfectly. He’s charming without being annoying, which is important because Sanji could easily become annoying if you cast the wrong actor.
The Whisky Peak arc sets up this larger threat that’s chasing them. There’s this sense that they’re getting into something bigger than they bargained for. It’s when you start to realize this show is building toward something.
Season 2 is the strongest season so far. The show found its rhythm. The action is better, the stakes feel real, and the character moments actually land. This is where I stopped thinking about the ratings and just enjoyed what I was watching.
Season 3
Okay, so season 3 is only one episode so far, which is kind of wild. They’re clearly building toward the Alabasta arc, which is a major story in the anime. One episode ends on a cliffhanger and now I have to wait like everyone else to see what happens next.
That one episode does its job though. It sets the table for what’s coming. You can feel that the show is about to get even bigger. The scale is expanding and the stakes are going up.
The cast overall is really the backbone of this whole thing. Godoy carries the show as Luffy because he makes you believe in this kid’s ridiculous dream. Rudd brings real depth to Nami. She’s not just a character, she’s got her own story that matters. Mackenyu makes Zoro cool without making him seem out of place in a live-action show. That’s harder than it seems.
Are there things I wish they’d done differently? Sure. Some of the CGI is a little wonky. Some supporting characters could be better developed. The pacing still has weird moments.
But honestly, this show made me want to keep watching. It’s fun, it’s got heart, and it actually respects the source material while doing its own thing. If you’ve been avoiding it because of the reviews, give it a shot. What did you think if you watched it? Are you caught up or still working through it?
