Rating: 7.6/10 | Genre: Action, Crime, Thriller | Runtime: 107 min

Starring: Jason Statham, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Harriet Walter

Jason Statham does what Jason Statham does best in Shelter, which is punch things and look annoyed about having to deal with other people’s problems. And honestly, that’s exactly what works about this movie.

The setup is straightforward. Statham plays a guy living alone on some remote island in the middle of nowhere. He’s clearly running from something. His past. Bad people. All of that. Then a storm hits and he finds a young girl washed up, played by Bodhi Rae Breathnach, who’s surprisingly good in this. She doesn’t play the kid as annoying or helpless, which could’ve easily happened. Instead she’s got this toughness to her even when she’s terrified.

He rescues her. That’s the inciting incident. And from there, the bad guys show up. Turns out she’s connected to his past somehow, and now all these dangerous people want her back. Naomi Ackie plays one of the antagonists and she’s genuinely unsettling in the role. Not over the top. Just cold and methodical about what she wants to do.

What surprised me most was how much the movie cares about the relationship between Statham’s character and the girl. It’s not sappy or heavy handed. There’s just this quiet understanding that builds between them. He’s trying to keep her alive. She’s trying to survive. They’re both stuck with each other. The script doesn’t waste time on emotional speeches. It just shows you these two people figuring out how to exist in this impossible situation together.

The action sequences are solid. Nothing groundbreaking. A few gunfights. Some chases. One scene involving a boat that was pretty tense. The pacing drags a bit in the middle though. There’s this stretch where the plot treads water for maybe twenty minutes. They’re hiding out, the bad guys are looking for them, but nothing really happens. You feel it.

Daniel Mays shows up as someone from Statham’s past and he’s fine. Harriet Walter plays the girl’s grandmother and gets maybe three scenes but makes them count. The supporting cast is solid without ever becoming distracting.

The island setting looks good. It’s isolated and bleak, which serves the story. You believe this guy chose to live out there. The cinematography isn’t flashy but it gets the job done. The camera work during the action scenes is clear enough that you can actually follow what’s happening, which I’m grateful for.

My biggest issue is that the ending feels a little rushed. The movie spends all this time building tension and then wraps things up pretty quickly once the climax kicks in. There’s a revelation about why the girl matters to his past that could’ve used more setup. It lands but not with the impact it probably should’ve had.

Also, the title “Shelter” refers to the physical shelter of the island but also this idea of protection and belonging, and the movie could’ve leaned harder into that thematically. Instead it’s mostly just a thriller that happens to have those elements in it.

At 107 minutes it doesn’t overstay its welcome. It’s a competent action thriller that knows what it is. It’s not trying to be anything more complicated than “can this guy keep this girl alive.” And it executes that pretty well. If you like Statham movies and you want something that won’t make you think too hard, this hits the spot. The chemistry between the leads helps a lot. It’s not a great movie but it’s a solid one.
