Starring: Jacob Anderson, Sam Reid, Assad Zaman, Delainey Hayles, Ben Daniels

I just finished binging both seasons of Interview with the Vampire and I’m honestly kind of obsessed. This show shouldn’t work as well as it does. It’s a vampire drama based on Anne Rice’s book, which already got adapted in the 90s, so why does it feel so fresh? Because it actually takes its time with the characters and lets them breathe. It’s not trying to be edgy for the sake of it. It’s actually interested in who these people are.

Fair warning though: this is not a fun vampire show. It’s dark and slow and sometimes genuinely depressing. But that’s kind of the point. If you’re looking for action and one-liners, you’re going to hate this. If you want something that actually makes you think about power and love and what it costs to live forever, you’re going to love it.

Season 1

Season 1 is about Louis, a wealthy Black man in 1910 New Orleans who gets turned into a vampire by Lestat, this charming but dangerous French guy. Louis is running his family’s business and trying to navigate life in the early 1900s South. Then Lestat shows up and basically offers him a way out of all of it. Forever.

The first season is really just these two. The tension between them is incredible. Jacob Anderson plays Louis with this quiet intensity that makes you feel every bit of his struggle. Sam Reid’s Lestat is the exact opposite. He’s loud and chaotic and kind of despicable but you can’t look away from him. They have zero chemistry in a good way. Like they genuinely seem to hate and need each other at the same time.

This season moves slowly but it works. You spend time in Louis’s head. You see him deal with what he’s become. He doesn’t want to kill people at first. He’s horrified by it. That’s interesting. Most vampire shows skip past that part. Here we actually sit with it.

By the end of the season, they turn a girl named Claudia and everything falls apart. The finale is brutal and weird and honestly sets up the rest of the show perfectly. Season 1 is seven episodes and it feels like the right length. No filler.

Season 2

Season 2 shifts the whole vibe. Louis and Claudia are in Paris after the first season’s ending and Lestat is basically gone. But then a new vampire named Armand shows up and things get messy in a totally different way.

The Paris setting is beautiful. The show takes advantage of it visually. But honestly, Season 2 is a step down from Season 1. It’s still good but it loses some of that tight focus. There’s a lot more plot happening now. Claudia’s looking for other vampires. Louis is figuring out what he wants. Armand has his own agenda. It works but it’s busier and less intimate.

The character of Claudia is interesting too. She’s stuck being seventeen forever because she was turned as a kid. She grows angrier throughout the show. Delainey Hayles does great work with her, especially as Claudia starts to realize how trapped she actually is. Her relationship with Louis gets really strained in Season 2 and by the end it’s genuinely tragic.

The Theatre des Vampires stuff in Season 2 is probably the weakest part of the show so far. It feels like the writers weren’t totally sure what to do with it. But the stuff with Armand and Louis’s developing relationship makes up for it. Ben Daniels plays Armand as this smooth, calculating guy who seems nice but you never quite trust him.

Season 2 ends on another cliffhanger and honestly it makes me want to know where this goes next. Even though the season wasn’t as tight as the first one, I’m invested enough to come back.

So here’s the thing: Interview with the Vampire is good. It’s really good if you’re okay with slow burns and character work over action. Jacob Anderson carries this show on his back and he does it beautifully. The supporting cast is strong across the board. The main problem is that not every episode works perfectly and sometimes the pacing drags. But the bones are solid.

If you like dark character dramas and don’t mind a little gore, give this a shot. Just go in knowing it’s not a thrilling vampire romp. It’s a show about people who happen to be vampires and what that does to them. Are you the kind of person who’d actually watch a show like that, or would you rather have something with more action?
