I just finished binging all 42 episodes of “The Heir” and honestly, I’m still thinking about it. This show sneaks up on you. It’s not flashy or trying too hard, but there’s something about watching a family claw their way back from complete ruin that just works. If you’ve been scrolling past it, don’t. This is worth your time.
Going in, I expected a typical underdog business drama. What I got was way more nuanced than that. Yes, the ink scandal that destroys the Li family is the catalyst, but the show uses it to explore something deeper about legacy, shame, and what you’re willing to sacrifice to fix your family’s mistakes. It never feels preachy about it either. The characters just live it.
Season 1
So the whole first season (all 42 episodes) follows Li Zhen as she tries to rebuild her family’s reputation in the ink business. After years of the scandal hanging over them, she decides enough is enough. The Li family’s name has to mean something again.
The early episodes set everything up pretty well. We get to know the family, understand what they’ve lost, and see why Li Zhen is so driven. Yang Zi plays her with this quiet intensity that grows on you. She’s not your typical drama heroine who cries and gets saved by a guy. She’s methodical. She makes plans. Sometimes they work and sometimes they blow up in her face.
Then Luo Wenqian enters the picture. Elvis Han brings this sharp energy to the role. He’s from another fallen family, so there’s this unspoken understanding between him and Li Zhen from the start. They team up to fight against this rising competitor who’s been taking over the market. The chemistry between them is natural, not forced. It takes time to build, which I appreciated.
The middle stretch of the season gets a little repetitive if I’m being honest. There are a few too many episodes where Li Zhen has a small setback and needs to problem-solve her way out. It works the first few times, but around episode 20 or so, I felt myself checking how many were left. That said, the supporting cast keeps things interesting. Wu Mian and Tian Xiaojie add texture to the story. They’re not just side characters. They have their own agendas and it matters.
The back half of the season picks up when foreign competition becomes a real threat. This is where the show finds its groove again. The stakes feel higher. The family drama gets heavier. And Li Zhen has to make some choices that don’t have easy answers. That’s when I was hooked for real.
By the finale, things have shifted in a big way for the Li family. There’s real progress. Real change. It doesn’t feel like a reset button got pushed. The season earns its ending, which is rare in dramas like this.
Look, this isn’t a perfect show. Some episodes drag. The pacing could be tighter. But the bones are solid and Yang Zi carries this thing on her shoulders. If you like shows about family business drama mixed with personal growth, give it a shot. Just maybe skip ahead a little if you hit that slow spot in the middle. What shows have you found that actually stick with you after finishing them?
