I just finished binging Devil May Cry and honestly? I’m a little obsessed. This show grabbed me by the throat in episode one and didn’t let go. It’s the kind of animated series that makes you forget you’re watching a screen because the action is so good and the story actually goes places you don’t expect.
Going in, I knew nothing about the Devil May Cry games. I figured that might hurt me, but it didn’t. The show works as its own thing. It’s got this perfect balance of over-the-top demon hunting action mixed with real character drama. The animation is gorgeous too. Like, genuinely some of the best I’ve seen in a while. When fights happen, you feel them.
Season 1
The first season kicks off with this Vatican heist that goes sideways fast. Demons, mercenaries, and mysterious organizations all colliding at once. It’s a solid hook. The show doesn’t waste time getting you invested. Within three episodes you’re already wondering what’s really going on and who all these characters are.
The main character is Dante, and yeah, he’s annoyingly handsome and cocky, but that’s kind of the point. He’s got this charm that makes it work instead of making him unbearable. He shows up to fight demons and crack jokes, but there’s clearly way more going on beneath the surface. The show slowly peels back the layers on his character throughout the season.
What really surprised me was Mary’s storyline. There’s a flashback episode that explains her past, and it’s legitimately tragic. It recontextualizes everything happening in the present. The show could have just kept her as the tough girl sidekick, but instead they gave her real depth.
Season 1 is tight. Eight episodes feels like the right length. Nothing drags. Every episode moves the plot forward while also building the world and characters. By the end, you understand the stakes. A war is coming. And it’s going to get messy.
Season 2
Season 2 is where things get crazy. The big twist is that Dante’s estranged brother Vergil comes into play, and suddenly it’s not just about stopping demons. It’s personal. It’s family. That’s where the show really shines because it’s not just about power levels and cool fights anymore. It’s about two brothers on opposite sides of a war.
Vergil is a great antagonist. He’s not evil just to be evil. He actually believes he’s doing the right thing. That complexity makes him way more interesting than a standard bad guy. Watching Dante and Vergil circle each other, remembering their past together while fighting for different futures, that’s the real heart of the show.
The demon world war stuff is cool but sometimes takes a backseat to the brother drama. That’s not a complaint though. The emotional stuff between Dante and Vergil is what makes you care. The big battle between the two of them feels inevitable but also devastating. You want them to work it out even though you know they probably won’t.
Lady gets more to do this season too, which I appreciated. She’s not just the supporting character. She’s got her own goals and her own issues with the conflict. The show respects her as a character with agency.
Season 2 is slightly messier than Season 1 in pacing, but in a good way. It’s more ambitious. It’s swinging for the fences. Some episodes move slower, but when they do, it’s because they’re building toward something. And when they hit, they hit hard.
If you like action shows that actually care about character development and aren’t afraid to get emotional, this is worth your time. The fights are incredible, the animation is beautiful, and the story goes places. It’s exactly the kind of show that should have gotten picked up for a second season, and it did.
Have you watched Devil May Cry yet, or are you on the fence about it?
