JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is legitimately one of the best anime I’ve watched in years, and I say that as someone who went in pretty skeptical. The show has a reputation for being weird and over-the-top, which it absolutely is, but it’s also incredibly fun and way more thoughtful than you’d expect. I binged all six seasons in about a month and honestly could’ve gone faster. It’s the kind of show that makes you want to immediately text your friends about what just happened.

The main thing to understand going in is that this isn’t one continuous story. Each season follows a different member of the Joestar family across different time periods. That sounds like it could be annoying, but it actually works really well. You get fresh characters, new villains, and totally different vibes without things ever feeling stale. The core idea is solid: the Joestar family keeps running into supernatural threats, especially ones tied to Dio Brando, and they have to figure out how to survive using their special powers called Stands.

Season 1

Season 1 is set in Victorian England and follows Jonathan Joestar and his adopted brother Dio. If I’m being honest, this season is the weakest of the bunch. It’s not bad, but it takes a while to get going. The first few episodes are pretty slow, and you’re kind of just watching two kids be mean to each other. Jonathan is pretty bland as a protagonist, and Dio is evil just to be evil, which works fine but isn’t as interesting as the villains you meet later.

That said, this season does its job. It sets up the whole Joestar versus Dio thing that becomes important later, and it introduces the idea of Stands, sort of. By the end you understand why this feud matters. The final episodes do pick up the pace significantly. It’s worth sitting through even if it’s slow because it’s the foundation for everything that comes after.

Season 2

This is where the show becomes genuinely great. Season 2 jumps to 1987 Japan and introduces Jotaro Kujo, a high school student who has discovered his Stand ability. Jotaro is infinitely more interesting as a protagonist than Jonathan. He’s tough, he’s smart, and he has actual personality beyond just being a good person.

The season builds around this mystery of why Jotaro and his friends suddenly have Stands, and the answer ties back to Dio in a really cool way. The pacing is perfect. You get character introductions that actually matter, fights that feel important, and a mystery that keeps you engaged. By the end you’re invested in these characters and you want to know what happens next. The voice acting really shines here too. Everyone sounds distinct and energetic in a way that makes the dialogue pop.

Season 3

Season 3 moves things forward to 1999 and introduces Josuke Higashikata, another Joestar family member who lives in a small town called Morioh. This season is a bit different from Season 2 because it’s less about one big villain and more about a series of Stand users and weird threats in Josuke’s hometown.

Josuke is a great character. He’s funny, he’s strong, and he actually cares about the people around him. This season leans way harder into the “bizarre” part of the title. Stuff gets genuinely strange and sometimes outright silly, but that’s what makes it work. The town of Morioh feels lived in. You understand the community and why Josuke wants to protect it.

Some episodes feel a bit filler-ish, which is fine for a show like this. Not every episode needs to move a huge plot forward. But the character work is solid throughout, and when major plot points do hit, they hit hard. This season also introduces a villain who is legitimately unsettling in a way that stays with you.

Season 4

Season 4 completely changes the setting to Naples, Italy, and follows Giorno Giovanna, another illegitimate Joestar who dreams of becoming a “Gang Star” and infiltrating the mafia. This season is basically a crime story, which is such a weird direction for JoJo to take but it totally works.

Giorno is a different kind of protagonist. He’s ambitious in a way that Jotaro and Josuke aren’t. He’s not fighting to protect people he cares about. He’s fighting for his own goals and his own dream. That makes for a really interesting dynamic, especially with the allies he teams up with. The group chemistry in this season is probably the best of all six seasons. Watching these characters work together and against each other is genuinely compelling.

The Stand abilities this season are also way more creative. Without spoiling anything, I’ll just say they get weird and clever in the best possible ways. The fights are longer and more strategic than in previous seasons, which actually makes them more exciting. This might be my favorite season overall.

Season 5

Season 5 puts us in Green Dolphin Street Prison with Jolyne Cujoh, the first female protagonist of the series. This season is a prison story, which again, is a wild choice for an anime, but the show commits to it completely.

Jolyne is a great character. She’s tough without being invincible, clever without being invulnerable, and her character arc is satisfying to watch. The prison setting actually works really well for a JoJo story because you have this confined space where weird supernatural stuff is happening and nobody can escape or call for help. It creates real tension.

That said, this season is a little weaker than Season 4. It’s still good, but some of the plot developments feel a bit contrived, and the pacing can get uneven. There are some genuinely great episodes and some that feel like filler. It’s still worth watching because the ending is strong and Jolyne’s relationships with the people around her are well developed. Just don’t expect it to be as tight as what came before.

Season 6

Season 6 is weird because it only has two episodes so far. It jumps back to 1890 and follows Johnny Joestar, a paralyzed former jockey, and his unlikely partnership with an outlaw named Gyro Zeppeli. The vibe is completely different from everything before it. This is a Western, basically.

I can’t really judge this season properly since there are only two episodes, but what’s there is genuinely intriguing. The character dynamics are fresh, the setting is totally new, and the mystery of what’s actually going on is compelling. The animation quality is noticeably higher in these episodes too. If the rest of Season 6 maintains this quality and keeps the momentum going, it could be something really special.

Look, if you’ve been sleeping on JoJo because it seems too weird or too long or too anime, I get it. But seriously, give it a shot. Start with Season 2 if Season 1 drags on you too much. The show knows what it is and it commits fully to being bizarre and fun while still telling actual stories with real stakes. The characters grow on you, the fights are creative, and there’s a genuine sense of fun running through the whole thing. Have you watched it yet, or are you one of the people still on the fence?
