I went into “Perfect Crown” with zero expectations and honestly? I’m really glad I watched it. This is a solid romantic comedy that knows exactly what it is and doesn’t try to be something it’s not. It’s fun, it’s got heart, and it wraps up nicely in 12 episodes without overstaying its welcome. The 7.7 rating feels about right. It’s not life-changing television, but it’s the kind of show that makes you happy when you finish it.
The premise is wild in the best way. A constitutional monarchy in 21st-century Korea? That’s not something you see every day in K-dramas. The setup is basically: rich heiress Huiju has money and power but no actual status or title. Meanwhile, Prince I-AN has all the prestige in the world but is basically broke and isolated. So they make a deal. Contract marriage. He gets money, she gets the title and legitimacy she’s been chasing. Cue the slow burn romance that nobody saw coming.
Season 1
There’s only one season here, and honestly, 12 episodes is the perfect length for this story. It doesn’t drag. The first few episodes set up the world and the characters really well. You get a feel for why Huiju is so desperate to prove herself and why I-AN is so closed off. The writing does a good job making you understand both of them without making excuses for their behavior.
IU carries this show hard. She plays Huiju with this perfect mix of confidence and vulnerability. One minute she’s this force of nature in a boardroom, the next she’s genuinely hurting because nobody takes her seriously. Her character arc is probably the strongest part of the whole season. She goes from trying to prove her worth to everyone else to realizing what actually matters to her.
Byeon Woo-seok as Prince I-AN takes a while to grow on you, but once he does, he’s great. He starts off kind of cold and distant, which makes sense given his whole situation, but watching him slowly open up is really satisfying. There’s this moment around episode 7 or 8 where you can see the shift happen and it’s genuinely nice to watch.
The supporting cast is fun but honestly kind of forgettable. Steve Sanghyun Noh and Gong Seung-yeon have their moments, but they feel like they’re just there to move the plot along sometimes. There’s one subplot involving Huiju’s family that gets a little messy in the middle episodes, but it resolves itself okay by the end.
The class commentary is there but it never gets too heavy-handed. The show is smart enough to acknowledge that these two come from completely different worlds, but it doesn’t beat you over the head with it. It’s mostly just the backdrop for their relationship, which works better than if they’d made it the entire focus.
My only real complaint is that there are a couple of episodes in the middle where the pacing gets a little slow. Like, I get why certain scenes need to happen, but they could’ve tightened it up. Nothing that made me want to quit, but definitely some moments where I was scrolling my phone a little.
The ending is satisfying without being predictable. I won’t spoil anything, but they don’t just go for the obvious choice. There’s actual thought put into how Huiju and I-AN end up where they do. It feels earned, not handed to you.
If you like romantic comedies with a little bit of drama, some fun world-building, and two leads that have actual chemistry, “Perfect Crown” is worth your time. It’s not going to blow your mind, but it’ll give you a genuinely entertaining 12 hours and that’s becoming rarer than it should be. Have you watched it yet, or are you thinking about jumping in?
