Nemesis is the kind of show that feels like it should be way better than it actually is. You’ve got a solid premise, a decent cast, and a network willing to let it play out for a full season. But somewhere between the script meetings and the final cut, something just doesn’t quite click. It’s entertaining enough to binge in a weekend, but it’s also the kind of show you’ll probably forget about by next month.
The core concept is solid: a cop who’s obsessed with catching a master thief. That’s been done before, sure, but there’s always room for a good execution of it. The problem is that Nemesis doesn’t quite stick the landing on what should be its main draw. The cat-and-mouse dynamic between detective Isaiah Stiles and the thief feels more like they’re dancing around each other than actually locked in some kind of epic battle.
Season 1
Season 1 kicks off with a Halloween heist that’s supposed to be jaw-dropping. It’s fine. The crew pulls off a job, it looks flashy, and we meet our detective Isaiah Stiles, played by Matthew Law. Law does what he can with the character, bringing some intensity to Stiles’ obsession, but the writing doesn’t always give him much to work with.
The season settles into a rhythm pretty quick. Stiles puts together a task force, they investigate robberies, and he becomes convinced he knows who’s running the show. There’s some decent procedural stuff here, and the show does a decent job of making you curious about whether Stiles is actually right about his suspect or just chasing ghosts.
Y’lan Noel shows up as part of the investigation team, and he’s probably the most watchable character on the show. He brings some charisma to his scenes and actually seems like he’s having fun. The rest of the cast is fine, but nobody else really stands out. Domenick Lombardozzi is there doing his thing, Cleopatra Coleman has some moments, but nobody’s going to be writing fan fiction about these characters.
Where Season 1 stumbles is in the heist stuff. You’d think the actual robberies would be the highlight, right? But they feel kind of routine. We’ve seen cooler heists on Ocean’s movies and better crime planning on shows like Leverage. The show wants you to think these are these incredible, daring jobs, but they’re just okay. They get the job done plot-wise, but they’re not why you’re actually watching.
The real problem is the pacing. With only 8 episodes, you’d think the show would move fast, but it actually feels sluggish at times. There are stretches in the middle where not much happens, and the show just kind of sits there waiting for you to care. By the time things pick up in the back half, you’re not as invested as you should be.
That said, the finale does enough to make you want to see where this goes in Season 2. There’s a twist that works, even if it’s not totally surprising. The show leaves you with some questions and some genuine tension between Stiles and whoever he’s chasing. It’s not enough to make Season 1 great, but it’s enough to make you curious.
If you’ve got 8 hours to kill and you like cop shows mixed with heist stuff, Nemesis is worth a shot. Just go in knowing that it’s more of a slow burn than an explosion. It’s a show that’s trying to be smarter than it actually is, and that gap between ambition and execution is pretty noticeable. The cast does their best, and there’s definitely fun to be had, but it never quite becomes the must-watch show it could have been.
Are you thinking about jumping in, or are you waiting to see if Season 2 steps things up?
