Okay, so I just finished binging Marshals and I have to say, it’s way better than I expected. Going in, I was skeptical. We all know how the Yellowstone universe has been hit or miss with the spin-offs. But this one actually works. Luke Grimes carries the show like he was born to play a U.S. Marshal, and the whole concept of taking Kayce out of the ranch drama and putting him into federal law enforcement feels fresh.

It’s not perfect. There are some clunky moments and the pacing drags in a couple episodes. But overall? This is solid television that doesn’t waste your time. If you liked Kayce as a character and you want more of him, you’ll dig this. If you’re just looking for a good crime drama with some action, it delivers.

Season 1

The first season jumps right in. Kayce is done with the ranch and all the family chaos that comes with it. He links up with this elite Marshal unit in Montana, and right away you can feel the appeal. It’s like he’s trying to find a new identity, something that’s just his. The team he joins has some real chemistry, and the cases they work feel grounded and urgent.

The first few episodes are strong. The pilot brings back an old SEAL teammate, which gives Kayce an anchor to his past. Then things get darker fast. Episode two involves a domestic terrorism angle that actually feels scary. By episode three, you’re seeing the show’s real conflict emerge: these ranching families and Native American communities dealing with violence that the local cops can’t handle.

Where the season works best is when it focuses on the actual Marshal work. The investigations feel real. The action sequences are well done without being over the top. Logan Marshall-Green, who plays Kayce’s partner, has great chemistry with Grimes. Arielle Kebbel brings a lot to the team too. She’s tough but also has this vulnerability that makes her character feel three-dimensional.

The stuff that doesn’t work as well is the personal drama. Kayce’s trying to maintain relationships back home, and some of those scenes feel like they’re just checking boxes. You get the sense the show is still figuring out how much Dutton family stuff to include. Spoiler alert: there’s less than you’d expect, which is actually a good thing.

By the middle of the season, things pick up. The cases get more complex. The team starts dealing with some serious trauma. Ash Santos plays a character named Martinez, and in later episodes, you really feel the weight of what these Marshals are dealing with. It’s not just about catching bad guys. It’s about how this job changes you.

The final few episodes of the season bring everything together pretty well. There’s a case that connects multiple storylines, and it forces Kayce to make some tough choices about what he’s willing to do. The season ends on a note that makes you want to keep watching. Not a crazy cliffhanger, but enough to make you curious about where this goes next.

Luke Grimes really is the backbone of this show. He’s quiet and intense in a way that works so much better for a federal agent than it did for a ranch hand. You buy that this guy has done hard things and carries that with him. The rest of the cast supports him well without overshadowing him, which is exactly what you want.

If I’m being honest, this season isn’t groundbreaking. It’s a solid crime drama that happens to have a really good lead actor. Some episodes feel a bit procedural. A couple plot points are predictable. But nothing feels wasted. The show respects your time, and it moves at a good pace.

I’d say jump in if you have some free time and you enjoy crime shows with a western angle. It’s not as heavy as it could be, but it’s not fluff either. Have you watched it yet, or are you thinking about starting it?
