I went into “Kuruluş: Orhan” expecting to either love it or find it completely overrated. Turns out it’s somewhere in the middle, which honestly feels right for a show like this. It’s not going to blow your mind, but if you’re into Turkish historical dramas or enjoyed the first series, there’s enough here to keep you invested for all 24 episodes. The show does what it sets out to do pretty well. It’s just not groundbreaking.
Fair warning though: this is a direct sequel to “Kuruluş: Osman,” so you probably need to watch that first to care about what’s happening. If you jump in cold, you’ll be lost about five minutes in.
Season 1
Season 1 follows Orhan Bey as he takes over from his father Osman and continues the Ottoman expansion. The main goal is capturing Bursa from Byzantine control, which has been under siege for nine years. Orhan’s dealing with a lot. He’s got to prove himself as a leader, keep his people unified, and actually win this massive battle. Meanwhile, there are enemies coming from every direction trying to stop him.
The pacing in the first half is pretty good. Episodes 1-12 build up the siege nicely and introduce all the political players involved. You get the sense that this siege actually matters and isn’t just going to be resolved in two episodes. The show takes its time, which I appreciated even if some people probably thought it was slow.
Things pick up around the middle when multiple forces start closing in on Orhan at once. The Byzantines, the Ilkhanate, and some rival Turkmen groups are all trying to stop him from taking Bursa. It gets chaotic in a good way. The battle sequences aren’t spectacular by modern TV standards, but they’re decent enough and feel earned because of all the setup.
The second half drags a little. Once Bursa actually falls, the show struggles a bit with what to do next. There’s some political fallout and succession stuff that just doesn’t hit as hard as the siege did. Some of the plot threads feel like they’re killing time before the season ends.
By episode 24, things pick up again with some real character consequences. Just when I thought the season was running out of steam, they land a few genuinely shocking moments that made me actually want to know what happens next. The final episode ends with a cliffhanger that’s set up reasonably well, not totally out of nowhere.
The Characters
Mert Yazıcıoğlu carries this show as Orhan Bey. He’s got the tough guy thing down, but he also plays the vulnerable moments where Orhan doubts himself. He’s not just a one-dimensional warrior. You see him struggle with leadership, with honor, with doing what’s right versus what’s necessary. It’s the kind of performance that makes a show watchable even when the script isn’t perfect.
Alina Boz plays Bala Hatun and honestly she’s great. Her character has real agency and isn’t just standing around looking concerned while men make decisions. She’s got her own goals and sometimes they conflict with Orhan’s, which creates actual tension. Their relationship is complicated in ways that feel real for the time period.
Mahassine Merabet plays a character that I won’t spoil, but she’s a scene stealer whenever she shows up. She brings something different to the show that keeps it from feeling too repetitive.
Barış Falay as Gündüz Bey works well as the loyal right-hand man type, but honestly his character doesn’t get enough room to breathe. He’s more of a plot device than a full character most of the time. Same with Burak Sergen, who’s fine but doesn’t leave much of an impression.
The villain characters are decent but not amazing. Some of them feel more like obstacles than actual people with real motivations. That’s probably the show’s biggest weakness when it comes to character work.
So is “Kuruluş: Orhan” worth your time? If you liked the first series, yeah, absolutely. It’s more of the same thing that worked before, which is good and bad. It’s not trying to reinvent the wheel. The first season is solid if a little uneven in places. The siege storyline is genuinely good television, even if other parts feel like filler.
The 7.5 rating on TMDB feels about right. It’s above average. Not essential viewing, but not a waste of time either. Just a solid historical drama that knows what it is.
Have you watched this one yet, or are you still on the fence about jumping in?
