Okay, so I finally watched Jujutsu Kaisen and I get why everyone won’t shut up about it. This show is legitimately great. It’s one of those anime that actually lives up to the hype, which is rare enough that it deserves mentioning right away. If you like action shows with real stakes and characters you actually care about, this is worth your time. Period.

The premise sounds simple enough: high school kid eats a cursed finger, accidentally becomes the host for one of the most powerful demons in existence, and now he has to learn sorcery to not die. But the show does so much more with that setup than you’d expect. It takes what could have been a generic shounen plot and makes it feel fresh somehow.

Season 1

Season 1 is 24 episodes of pure entertainment. The first few episodes do a good job introducing Yuji Itadori and making you understand why he’d make such a stupid decision as to eat a cursed finger. His relationship with his grandfather is genuinely sweet, and when stuff goes down, you feel it.

Then he gets pulled into Jujutsu High School, meets his teacher Satoru Gojo, and things escalate. Gojo is immediately the coolest character on screen. He’s absurdly overpowered, but instead of being annoying about it, the show leans into the comedy. He’s just so confident and laid back about everything that he’s funny without trying too hard.

Yuji’s classmates are great too. Nobara shows up as the tough girl character but she’s got actual personality beyond that. Megumi is the stoic pretty boy type, but he gets real character moments where you see why he cares. Their dynamic feels natural, like friends who actually mesh instead of just being thrown together.

The mid-season arc involving the Kyoto school is where things get really good. The tournament-style battles are exciting without feeling like they drag on forever. The show knows when to let action breathe and when to cut away. That’s not always obvious in anime, but Jujutsu Kaisen gets it.

The later episodes introduce Ryomen Sukuna more as a character instead of just a threat. He’s a demon, sure, but he’s got personality and history. The way he and Yuji interact becomes one of the best parts of the show. Yuji is trying to use Sukuna’s power while Sukuna is just around causing problems and being interested in how humans work. Their dynamic is genuinely funny and messed up at the same time.

The animation is absolutely solid throughout. MAPPA really put in work here. Action sequences actually look like money was spent on them. Fights are choreographed so you can follow what’s happening, but they still have style and impact. It never feels like they cut corners, which you notice because a lot of anime do.

My only real complaint with Season 1 is that some of the filler episodes in the middle feel a little unnecessary. They’re not bad, but they don’t add much. It’s a minor thing though because the good episodes are really good and carry the whole thing forward.

The season ends on a note that makes you want to immediately start the next one. I’m not going to spoil what happens, but it changes the status quo in a way that feels earned and makes you nervous about what’s coming next. That’s good storytelling.

If you haven’t watched this yet and you like anime at all, just go watch it. It’s got great action, fun characters, and enough personality that it stands out from the crowded anime space. Have you seen it yet, or are you one of the people on my timeline who keeps telling me I need to get to the Shibuya arc?
