Official Trailer

Rating: 0/10 | Genre: Comedy, Horror | Runtime: 95 min

Starring: Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Damon Wayans Jr.

I walked into this movie expecting the Wayans brothers to do what they’ve always done: make fun of horror movies while also being genuinely funny. Twenty-six years later and they’re still at it, which is kind of wild when you think about it. The original Scary Movie came out in 2000. We’re living in a timeline where this franchise got a sequel in 2026.

Here’s the thing though. This movie doesn’t work. And I say that as someone who actually likes the Scary Movie series. Marlon and Shawn are back with Anna Faris and Regina Hall, plus Damon Wayans Jr. joining the crew. The plot is straightforward enough. The Core Four, these characters who survived a masked killer back in the day, are getting hunted again. And this time, nothing is off limits. They’re going after every horror franchise you can think of.

The problem is the script feels tired. The jokes miss way more often than they land. There’s a scene where they’re making fun of jump scares and one of the characters literally just yells at the screen to warn people. It’s lazy. I found myself checking my phone more than I expected to.

Marlon Wayans still has great comedic timing. He can salvage scenes that probably shouldn’t work. But even he can’t carry this whole thing. There’s a bit where he’s running from the killer and he stops to do a bit about the price of gas and it just sits there. It doesn’t connect.

Anna Faris is barely in this movie. She shows up, says a few lines, and then disappears for huge stretches. Regina Hall does more with her character but the script doesn’t give her much to work with. The chemistry between the cast feels off too. Like everyone is just going through the motions.

At 95 minutes, this movie should feel tight and fast. Instead it drags. There are long stretches where nothing happens and the jokes aren’t landing so you’re just waiting for the next thing. The pacing is genuinely bad for a comedy. Comedy needs momentum. This has none of it.

The kill scenes, which are supposed to be both scary and funny, are neither. They’re just kind of gross and not in a fun way. The movie can’t decide if it wants to actually scare you or just make you laugh at the scares. It ends up doing neither.

I really wanted this to work. The concept is solid. Horror has given us so much material to make fun of in the last couple decades. Elevated horror, the superhero-ification of horror, all that stuff. There’s something there to work with. But the execution just isn’t there.

If you loved the original Scary Movie movies, skip this one. It’s not worth your time. If you’re thinking about watching it because you want some easy laughs, go watch one of the earlier films instead. They’re still funny. This one definitely isn’t. Have you seen any of the previous Scary Movies? Are you planning to watch this one anyway?
