The Boys is the kind of show that makes you feel a little guilty for enjoying it so much. It’s violent, crude, and doesn’t apologize for either. But it’s also genuinely smart about what it’s doing, which is why I binged all five seasons in basically two weeks. Is it perfect? No. Does it stumble pretty badly toward the end? Yeah. But for most of its run, this show is exactly what superhero TV needs to be: irreverent, unpredictable, and willing to actually kill people you care about.

Season 1

The first season is basically a perfect introduction to what The Boys is trying to do. You’ve got this ordinary guy, Hughie, whose girlfriend gets killed by A-Train because the superhero was too busy running to notice he was speeding. Instead of getting justice through the system, Hughie joins up with Billy Butcher and a ragtag group of vigilantes to take down the corrupt heroes everyone thinks are saving the world.

What works so well here is how grounded everything feels despite the superpowers. These aren’t comic book heroes in spandex making quippy one-liners. These are narcissistic, abusive people who use their power to do whatever they want. The show’s not subtle about it, but it doesn’t need to be. Antony Starr’s Homelander is legitimately terrifying as the all-American hero who’s actually a sociopath, and Karl Urban is perfect as Butcher, this guy who’s willing to burn down the whole world to get revenge.

Eight episodes is the perfect length. The season moves fast, doesn’t waste time, and ends with stakes that actually matter. This is how you hook people on a show.

Season 2

Season 2 doubles down on everything that worked in season 1 and somehow makes it even meaner. The Boys are on the run, Homelander is losing his grip on sanity, and the whole thing spirals into this beautifully chaotic mess where nobody’s winning and everyone’s bleeding.

The addition of Aya Cash as Stormfront is one of the best decisions the show makes. She’s a Nazi supe and she’s absolutely unhinged, and the chemistry between her and Homelander is electric in the worst possible way. You hate watching them together because their dynamic is so toxic and crazy.

This is probably the season where The Boys is firing on all cylinders. It’s got the best balance of humor, action, and actual character development. Hughie and Starlight’s relationship gets tested. Butcher has to confront his past. A-Train’s whole thing is falling apart. Every character is moving somewhere, and it actually feels earned.

Season 3

Season 3 is where the show starts to feel like it’s repeating itself. There’s this promise that things are getting better, that maybe Butcher can work within the system, but that all falls apart pretty quickly. Homelander gets worse. Butcher gets angrier. And the show kind of spins its wheels for a while before things blow up again.

The good stuff is still here. The show introduces Ryan, Homelander’s actual son, and watching that relationship develop is genuinely disturbing. You get to see Homelander almost be a father and almost be human, which makes him even scarier because you know it won’t last. Karl Urban also gets more interesting stuff to do as Butcher, showing cracks in his tough guy persona.

But honestly? This season drags. By the end of episode 5, you’re wondering if they’re going to do anything new or if they’re just going to have the same fights with slightly different people.

Season 4

Season 4 picks things back up. The whole vibe shifts to feel more political and more urgent. Homelander isn’t just killing people anymore. He’s organizing, building power, moving toward actual fascism. Victoria Neuman is in the mix, trying to use the Supes to climb the political ladder. And Butcher is literally dying from the stuff that gave him temporary powers, so his timeline is getting shorter.

This season actually feels dangerous in a way season 3 didn’t. Things happen that you don’t expect. Characters make choices that have real consequences. There’s an energy to it that reminds you why you fell in love with the show in the first place.

The problem is it’s only eight episodes, and they pack a lot of plot in there. Sometimes it feels like things move too fast, and you don’t get enough time to sit with what’s happening. But that’s almost better than season 3’s pacing issues.

Season 5

Here’s where I have to be honest with you: the final season is a letdown. Not a complete disaster, but it doesn’t stick the landing the way a show like this needs to. After spending four seasons building toward this moment where Homelander has basically taken over America, the last season feels rushed and anticlimactic.

The premise is cool. Homelander controls everything now. He’s running actual fascist camps. The Boys have to mount an impossible resistance from the outside. But somehow the execution feels thin. The season zips through major plot points without giving them room to breathe. Character arcs that should feel earned instead feel predetermined. And the ending, while not bad, doesn’t feel like a natural conclusion to everything that came before.

That said, Antony Starr’s performance throughout the whole thing is worth watching. He finds new layers to Homelander’s insanity, and when the show gives him space to work, it’s genuinely unsettling. Karl Urban stays committed to Butcher even when the writing doesn’t give him much to work with. These two carry the show through sheer force of will.

The Boys is one of those shows that’s great enough that you’ll watch all of it, but honest enough with itself that it knows it stuck the landing harder in the middle. If you haven’t seen it, start it. You’ll be hooked. Just know going in that the final season is more about wrapping things up than it is about surprising you. What season did you think peaked for you, or have you not started it yet?
