So I just finished binging all eight seasons of The Rookie, and honestly? It’s way better than it has any right to be. When I first saw the premise, I thought it sounded like a gimmick. A 45-year-old guy becoming a cop after a midlife crisis? That should be terrible. But Nathan Fillion is so likeable, and the show is so good at balancing comedy with actual stakes, that it just works. This is comfort TV that doesn’t insult your intelligence.

Fair warning though: the quality does dip a bit around the middle seasons. And Season 9 hasn’t aired yet, so I can’t speak to where things are heading. But overall, this is a show I’d recommend to basically anyone who likes crime dramas that don’t take themselves too seriously.

Season 1

The pilot hooks you immediately. John Nolan is this earnest guy who decides to become a cop for real reasons, not just because of some quarter-life crisis nonsense. He’s genuine. He cares. And yes, everyone at the LAPD thinks he’s insane, but he doesn’t care what they think.

Season 1 is all about him proving himself during his training. His training officer Talia is tough on him, which makes sense. She doesn’t believe in him at first. The show does a good job showing that being a cop is hard, and that your life experience doesn’t automatically make you good at the job. You still have to learn. You still have to prove yourself.

The crime cases are interesting without being too heavy. There’s this nice balance between procedural stuff and character development. By the end of the season, you’re invested in Nolan. You want to see him make it.

Season 2

Six months in, and Nolan is finally starting to feel like an actual cop. This season is where the show finds its rhythm. The cases get better. The character dynamics click. And the show starts building a real ensemble cast instead of just focusing on Nolan.

This is also when his relationship with Jessica starts, which adds some personal drama to the work stuff. It’s not overdone. It feels natural. The show is smart about how it handles romance without letting it take over the whole show.

Season 2 is probably the strongest season up to this point. Everything works. The pacing is good. The humor lands. The serious moments actually hit.

Season 3

Okay, so this is where things start to feel a bit repetitive. The season is shorter (only 14 episodes), and it feels like the show is just going through the motions a little bit. Nolan’s mom shows up, there’s some family drama, but it doesn’t land the way earlier character stuff did.

That said, this is still fine TV. It’s not bad. It’s just not as sharp as what came before. The cases are solid. Nolan’s growth as a cop is still interesting to watch. It’s just that the season feels like filler compared to Season 2.

Season 4

This season gets dark. And I mean dark. There are moments where the show reminds you that cops deal with real trauma, real violence, real loss. It’s a tonal shift from the earlier seasons, but it mostly works.

The case involving Lopez hits different because you care about her as a character. The show has done the work to make you care about these people. So when bad things happen, it matters. There’s weight to it.

Season 4 is also longer (22 episodes), so it has time to breathe and develop multiple storylines. Some work better than others, but overall it’s solid. Not as good as Season 2, but way better than Season 3.

Season 5

Now Nolan is a training officer, which is a fun new dynamic. He’s on the other side of the mentoring relationship now. And his rookie, Celina, is a handful. She’s got skills but also has this wild streak that makes her unpredictable.

The show uses this new setup to explore what Nolan has learned over the years. How does he teach someone else to be a cop when he’s still relatively new himself? It’s a good question, and the season does some interesting things with it.

This is also when his relationship with Bailey becomes more central to the plot. And unlike some TV romances, this one actually feels earned. They have chemistry. They make sense together. By the end of the season, you want them to work out.

Season 6

This season is weird because it’s only 10 episodes long. It feels incomplete. Like the show got cut short mid-season. That said, what we get is pretty good. The team celebrates John and Bailey’s wedding, which is a nice moment.

But then their honeymoon goes wrong, and the show gets back to the serious cop stuff. It doesn’t stay on the romance stuff too long, which I appreciate. The show knows what it is. It’s a cop show first, romance second.

Even though this season is short, it doesn’t feel rushed. The writers know how to tell a story in limited episodes. It’s just a shame we didn’t get a full season to work with.

Season 7

Nolan gets shot early in the season, and he’s dealing with the physical and mental aftermath of that. This is some of the best character work the show has done. He’s not invincible. He’s getting older. His body doesn’t recover the same way it used to. It’s real stuff.

The season also brings back an old villain from earlier seasons, which feels like it has stakes because of all the history there. The show is good at not just introducing new bad guys every week. It builds on what came before.

There’s also a manhunt for escaped inmates, which keeps the season moving forward. Multiple storylines are happening at once, and they all feel important. This is solid police drama.

Season 8

So this season sends the team to Prague for an international assignment. And look, that’s a fun change of pace. Different scenery. Different cases. It keeps the show from feeling stale.

But here’s the thing: it also feels like the show is running out of ideas a little bit. The Prague arc is fun, but it’s not essential. It doesn’t change who these characters are. And when they get back to Los Angeles, it’s like nothing really happened.

That said, the individual episodes are still well-written. The cases are interesting. The character moments still land. It’s just that the season as a whole doesn’t have the momentum that earlier seasons had.

By this point, you can feel the show getting tired. Not badly tired. It’s still worth watching. But it’s not the tight, compelling show it was in Seasons 2 and 4.

I’m curious to see where Season 9 goes since it hasn’t aired yet. The show has definitely lost some steam, but the cast is still good, and there’s still enough here to keep watching. Have you watched The Rookie? If so, which season do you think was the best?
