So I just finished binging “Viral Hit” and honestly? I’m kind of torn on this one. The premise had me hooked. A bullied kid becomes famous overnight and has to deal with the fallout. That’s juicy. That’s the kind of thing that could go really dark and interesting. But the show only has two episodes out right now, which means I’m sitting here with blue balls waiting for more and also trying to figure out if this thing is actually going anywhere or if it’s just spinning its wheels.

Let me be real with you right off the bat. The TMDB rating of 0/10 is a red flag. Like, not even one person gave it a point? That’s either because nobody’s rated it yet or because it’s genuinely rough. I’m going to guess it’s the former since the show literally just came out. But I went in with lowered expectations, and that actually helped me enjoy it more than I probably would have otherwise.

Season 1

Okay, so the show opens with Shimura getting absolutely bullied by this guy Hamaken. And I mean bullied in every way possible. The first episode sets up this brutal dynamic where Shimura is just taking hits from all angles. Then out of nowhere, a viral video changes everything. Suddenly he’s famous. People know his face. The same kids who were mocking him are now trying to be his friend.

The problem is that we only have two episodes, so the show barely gets started. Episode one is all setup. Episode two is where things get interesting because Shimura actually starts fighting back. He learns from some guy named TOU-KEI and decides to stand up for himself instead of just taking the abuse. It’s the moment where you feel like okay, this is the character journey I signed up for.

But here’s where it gets frustrating. The second episode ends on this cliffhanger about him disappearing, and everyone’s looking for him, and there’s this whole thing about him being humiliated in front of his crush. And then that’s it. You’re done. No more episodes.

What worked for me in these two episodes was the basic concept and the pacing. The show doesn’t waste time getting to the point. It throws you into Shimura’s nightmare, shows you how viral fame flips the script, and then shows him taking action. That’s solid. What didn’t work was the fact that nothing really gets resolved or developed yet. The character arcs barely exist when you only have six episodes total and we’re only seeing two of them.

The Cast

Ouji Suzuka plays Shimura, the main guy, and he’s actually pretty good at being pathetic in a way that makes you want him to win. He sells the desperation of someone who’s been trampled on and is finally snapping. I believed his anger in episode two.

The other cast members haven’t had enough time to make real impressions yet. Hamaken shows up as the typical bully, and he’s fine. Nobody’s winning awards, but nobody’s terrible either. It’s competent acting in service of a story that’s still finding its footing.

I’m curious to see if the supporting characters like Ai Mikami and the others get actual development as the season continues. Right now they’re just pieces on the board, but there’s room for them to become interesting.

The real question for me is whether this show is going to stick the landing on what it’s trying to say about fame, bullying, and self-defense. Two episodes isn’t enough to know. If you’re the type who likes to wait until a full season is out before watching, I’d honestly recommend doing that. But if you’re willing to jump in early and wait for new episodes, it’s got potential. What are your thoughts on waiting for shows versus binging them all at once?
