I went into Widow’s Bay expecting a straightforward mystery show with some laughs thrown in. What I got was something actually really fun and weird that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The 8.3 rating on TMDB is justified. This is a show that knows exactly what it is, and it commits to the bit in a way that makes you want to keep watching.
The premise is simple but hilarious. A desperate mayor wants to turn his cursed island town into a tourist destination. Everyone around him is basically like “dude, no, the curse is real,” and he just keeps pushing forward anyway. It’s such a perfect setup for comedy mixed with actual mystery elements, and the show pulls it off without feeling like it’s juggling too many tones.
Season 1
All ten episodes drop at once, and honestly, I binged them in two days. The first episode hooks you immediately. Matthew Rhys plays Mayor Tom Loftis, and he’s the perfect actor for this role. He’s doing something that could easily be annoying if the wrong person played it, but Rhys makes Tom desperate and sincere in a way that makes you root for him even when he’s making terrible decisions.
The early episodes set up the town and the curse stuff. There’s weird history. People have died in weird ways. The locals all know something is off, but Tom is determined to ignore all of it and just market the place as a quaint New England getaway. The episode where he tries to prove the town is safe by swimming in the ocean is probably the funniest one.
Stephen Root is here as some kind of town official, and he’s great. Kate O’Flynn plays a local who knows way more about what’s actually going on than anyone else. Kevin Carroll shows up and brings some real drama to the mix. Dale Dickey is fantastic as this woman who has seen some stuff and is not impressed by Tom’s schemes.
The mystery stuff actually works. It’s not trying to be some big shocking twist. It’s more like you’re slowly figuring out what everyone else already knows. There are legitimately creepy moments mixed in with the comedy, which sounds weird but really works.
By episode six or seven, you’re fully invested. The show doesn’t outstay its welcome with the season either. Ten episodes feels like the perfect length. It tells a complete story without dragging things out.
My only real complaint is that sometimes the tonal shifts between the comedy and the darker stuff feel a little jarring. There’s a moment in episode eight where something pretty dark happens, and then the next scene is Tom doing something ridiculous, and it takes a second to adjust. But honestly, that’s a small thing. Most of the time it works.
If you like shows that don’t take themselves too seriously but still have real stakes, Widow’s Bay is worth your time. It’s funny without being a comedy, mysterious without being a thriller, and weird without being pretentious. The cast is selling it completely, and you can tell everyone involved is having fun making this thing.
The show got picked up for a second season, and I’m genuinely curious where they take it. Are you planning to watch this, or have you already started it? What did you think of the ending?
