I just finished “Regular Show: The Lost Tapes” and I’m genuinely shocked at how good this is. Like, I went in expecting a nostalgia cash grab that would feel stale and tired. Instead, I got ten episodes of pure chaos that somehow feels both familiar and fresh at the same time. If you loved the original show, this is absolutely worth your time. Even if you haven’t seen it before, this season works as a solid entry point into the weird world of Mordecai and Rigby.
The 9.7 rating on TMDB isn’t some crazy overrated thing either. This show has earned it.
Season 1
So we get ten episodes here, and they’re all tight. Nothing feels bloated or stretched too thin. The season opens with “Fix That Tape,” which is honestly the perfect way to jump back into this universe. A broken VHS tape. That’s it. That’s the entire premise. But of course, Mordecai and Rigby can’t just fix a tape. Things escalate in ways that don’t make sense until they somehow do, and by the end you’re watching reality glitch out because of a cassette. It’s so dumb and so fun.
“Skips’ Luau” is the episode where things get weird in a different way. The main plot is just about wanting a burger with some special ingredient. Sounds simple, right? Wrong. There’s something off about this episode that I can’t quite explain without spoiling it, but it messes with you in the best way. This is where I realized this show wasn’t just coasting on the original’s reputation.
“Blade Games” gives us Benson in a new light. We see him trying to find better ways to motivate the crew, which sounds boring when you write it out. But it works because the show actually lets characters grow here. Benson isn’t just yelling. He’s learning. And the chaos that follows is hilarious because it comes from a genuine place.
The other seven episodes keep that same energy going. There’s no filler. Each one builds on what came before, but they also stand on their own. You could watch them out of order and still have a good time, which is a skill a lot of comedies don’t have anymore.
The pacing is what really gets me. These episodes know when to slow down and when to go absolutely bonkers. There’s real character moments mixed in with the surreal stuff. It doesn’t feel like the show is trying too hard to be weird for weird’s sake.
The Cast
J.G. Quintel voices Mordecai, and he still sounds perfect. He carries so much of the show with just his voice. The timing on his reactions to increasingly insane situations is spot on every single time. You believe him as the straight man character who just wants things to be normal.
William Salyers as Rigby is the other half of that equation, and the chemistry between these two is still great. Rigby gets to be the chaos agent without being annoying about it. There’s a sweetness to these characters that could’ve been lost if the show leaned too hard into pure absurdity. It didn’t.
Mark Hamill shows up in the cast list, and when you hear him, it just hits different. I won’t say who he voices or how much he’s in it, but his presence alone adds something special to the show. He’s clearly having fun with whatever role he took on.
Sam Marin does great work too with the supporting cast. Everyone feels like they belong in this world.
Is this show perfect? No. Some of the later episodes feel slightly rushed compared to the earlier ones. There’s one episode around the middle that drags a bit, and I wish it had more energy. But that’s honestly my only real complaint about the whole season.
If you’re looking for something that’s smart, funny, and doesn’t waste your time, “Regular Show: The Lost Tapes” is exactly what you need right now. It proves that bringing back older shows doesn’t have to feel cheap. So here’s my question for you: are you planning to watch this, or are you still sleeping on it?
