Okay, so I just finished binging all 17 seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants and I need to talk about this. The show is genuinely good, but it’s also kind of a mess in the later seasons. If you grew up with this show like I did, the earlier stuff will hit different. The 7.7 rating on TMDB feels about right, honestly. It’s not a masterpiece, but the best episodes are legitimately hilarious and hold up way better than you’d expect from a cartoon about a sponge who works at a fast food restaurant.
Season 1
The first season is where the magic happens. This is peak SpongeBob. Everything feels fresh and the jokes land constantly. You get to meet all the main characters: SpongeBob himself, who is just aggressively optimistic; Squidward, his miserable neighbor; Patrick, a starfish who is dumber than a box of rocks; and Sandy, the squirrel from Texas living underwater for some reason. The premise sounds ridiculous but it works.
The early episodes like “Help Wanted” and “Reef Blower” establish everything you need to know about these characters instantly. SpongeBob is annoying but lovable. Squidward hates his job and hates SpongeBob. Patrick is along for the ride. By the end of season one, you get “The F.U.N. Song” which is legitimately one of the best things the show ever made. Forty-one episodes and barely a dud in the bunch. This is comfort food television at its best.
Season 2
Season 2 keeps the momentum going pretty well. It’s got some really solid episodes like the ones they mention with Bubble Buddy and Frankendoodle. The show starts experimenting more with the format and it mostly pays off. You can tell the writers are getting more confident with what works.
The problem is you start to see the formula getting established here. SpongeBob does something innocent and stupid, everything goes wrong, Squidward suffers, everyone learns nothing and repeats it next episode. It’s fine for a kids show, but you notice it more as time goes on. Still, season 2 is way more good than bad, and there are definitely episodes here that stick with you.
Season 3
This is still really solid. Season 3 has some classics. The Plankton and Mr. Krabs episodes are starting to get repetitive but they’re still funny. The camping episode is great. Patrick coming to school is hilarious because Patrick is an idiot and the show knows it. Forty episodes and it feels earned, not stretched thin.
By this point the show has found its groove completely. It knows who these characters are and what makes them tick. The humor is a mix of stupid jokes for kids and weirdly smart jokes for adults watching it. That balance is hard to nail and SpongeBob does it well here.
Season 4
Season 4 is still good but you start to feel it getting a little tired. It’s still got good episodes but there are more misses now. The novelty of the basic setup is wearing off. Forty episodes feels like a lot. Some of these episodes feel like they’re retreading what the show has already done better.
It’s not bad. There are still plenty of laughs. But this is where I started to notice that the show might not be able to sustain itself forever. The writers can only do so much with the same characters in the same locations doing the same types of jokes.
Season 5
Season 5 is where things really start to slip. It’s still watchable but now you’re getting filler. The show feels like it’s running out of ideas. Thirty-six episodes and that’s a relief because honestly it means the season ends sooner. There are still good moments but you have to dig for them now instead of them being everywhere.
The core of the show is still there but the spark is dimming. The plots feel more forced. The jokes don’t land as hard. It’s weird because the show is supposed to stay on the air forever but even this early you can feel it struggling a bit.
Season 6
Okay, season 6 actually has some good stuff in it. Forty-seven episodes is a lot but some of these are actually creative. The show seems to realize it needs to try new things. There are some fun episodes where SpongeBob does different jobs and gets into different situations. It’s not as good as the early seasons but it’s better than season 5, which is something.
The problem is that quantity is really starting to hurt. With that many episodes per season, you’re going to get a lot of forgettable stuff mixed in with the decent episodes. It’s exhausting to watch sometimes because you know most of it is filler.
Season 7
Season 7 is massive. Fifty-two episodes. That’s way too much. Even with some creative high points, this season feels like it’s drowning in its own output. There are some fun ideas here but they’re buried under so much mediocre stuff.
By the end of season 7 I was watching more out of obligation than enjoyment. The show had become a job to get through instead of something fun. That’s when I realized this show has a real problem: it’s been on the air for so long that quality doesn’t matter anymore. It just has to keep existing.
Season 8
Season 8 is another massive season at fifty-two episodes. This is where the show really starts feeling worn out. There are occasional decent episodes but mostly it’s just going through the motions. The characters feel like they’re on autopilot. The jokes are recycled. Nothing feels new or interesting anymore.
The double-length episodes they mention don’t really help. If anything, they just mean longer episodes of material that isn’t that great. This is the season where I realized I was genuinely not enjoying watching SpongeBob anymore.
Season 9
Forty-seven episodes and honestly this season is forgettable. I can barely remember what happens in it. That’s not a good sign. A show should stick with you even if it’s not great. Season 9 just kind of exists and then it’s over.
There might be a few decent episodes hiding in here but nothing jumped out at me. This is the dead zone where the show is just coasting on its name recognition.
Season 10
Okay, so season 10 only has twenty episodes instead of forty or fifty. That was a mercy. And you know what? The shorter season actually makes it better. There’s less filler because there’s less time to fill. It’s still not great but it feels less bloated. The quality control is slightly better when you’re not trying to pump out fifty episodes a year.
This is a turning point where I started caring again just a little bit. The show needed this break from trying to do so much all the time.
Season 11
Season 11 goes back up to fifty-one episodes and yeah, you feel it. But there’s something in the air here that suggests the show is trying to keep itself interesting. Fifty episodes is still too many but at least the writers seem like they’re putting in effort again. It’s not a great season but it doesn’t feel completely phoned in like some of the earlier later seasons.
Season 12
Thirty-five episodes is a nice sweet spot. Season 12 feels more manageable. It’s not hitting like the early seasons but it’s not completely terrible either. There’s a weird charm to some of these episodes even if the humor isn’t as sharp as it used to be.
Season 13
Season 13 has sixty-four episodes. That’s a lot. The show is all over the place with episode counts. Sixty-four episodes feels excessive but whatever, at this point I’m just trying to finish the thing. The show is what it is at this point. It’s a long running cartoon that exists more out of habit than anything else.
Season 14
Finally they cut it back to twenty-three episodes. Thank god. The shorter seasons actually make this watchable again. It’s still not good but it’s not as much of a slog. By this point in the show’s life, I think the creators realize they can’t keep churning out fifty episodes a season without completely killing what made the show work.
Season 15
Twenty-four episodes. This is the right length. The show works better when it’s lean like this. There’s less time for pure garbage. The quality doesn’t go up dramatically but the ratio of good to bad improves. It’s almost like the show found a sustainable pace finally.
Season 16
Twenty-two episodes. The show is still doing its thing but honestly it feels like it’s just running on fumes at this point. The episodes exist. Some are okay. Most you’ll forget by the time you finish them. This is a show that probably should have ended like five seasons ago but it’s a cash cow so it keeps going.
Season 17
We’re at sixteen episodes for season 17 and the show is still chugging along. I watched all of these but I couldn’t tell you what happened in most of them. The show is just existing at this point. It’s not offensively bad but it’s not interesting either. It’s background noise you can have on while doing other things.
So here’s the thing about SpongeBob SquarePants: the early seasons are genuinely good television. Seasons 1 through 3 especially are worth watching. They’re funny, they’re creative, and they don’t overstay their welcome. But the show just kept going. And going. And going. After seventeen seasons and 646 episodes, there’s a lot more bad than good. The format works better in shorter doses. The characters have been pushed through every possible plot already. The jokes are tired.
Should you watch this show? Yeah, absolutely watch the first few seasons. They’re solid. But don’t feel like you need to finish all seventeen seasons like I did. The show got the chance to end on top and didn’t take it. It’s a cautionary tale about what happens when you let something popular run forever instead of letting it actually conclude. Which seasons did you think were the best? Are you someone who tapped out early or did you stick it out?
