I took my kids to see The Sheep Detectives last weekend expecting a cute farm movie. What I got was actually funny. Like, I laughed out loud funny, not just the polite chuckle you do at kids’ movies.
The setup is simple enough. Hugh Jackman plays George, a shepherd who reads mystery novels to his sheep every night. He thinks it’s a nice way to pass the time, harmless background noise for the animals. Then something gets stolen from the farm, and the sheep somehow piece together that they need to actually solve this mystery. It’s absurd. It’s supposed to be absurd. That’s the whole point.
The Cast Makes This Work
What surprised me most was how good the voice acting is. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is the lead sheep, and she brings this dry, sarcastic energy that just kills. She’s skeptical about the whole detective thing at first, which is the most realistic sheep reaction I could imagine. Nicholas Galitzine plays another sheep who’s maybe a little too enthusiastic about the investigation. The chemistry between the sheep voices actually feels natural, which sounds weird to say about cartoon sheep.
Hugh Jackman and Emma Thompson have smaller roles as human characters, but they ground the movie in something real. Jackman especially is great at playing the clueless shepherd who has no idea his sheep are solving crimes right under his nose. There’s this moment where he almost catches them investigating, and the tension is actually pretty funny.
The Mystery Part Actually Works
I was worried this would be one of those movies where the plot doesn’t matter and it’s just gags for ninety minutes. But there’s a real mystery here. A prize-winning wool shipment goes missing, and there are actual suspects. Nicholas Braun plays a suspicious farmhand, and the sheep do real detective work to figure out what happened. They follow clues, interview people, find evidence. It’s legitimately clever.
The movie doesn’t talk down to kids either. There are red herrings. There are false leads. The sheep get it wrong a few times before they get it right. By the end, you actually want to know who took the wool.
The Pacing Stumbles a Bit
At 109 minutes, there are definitely some slow stretches. The middle section drags a little when the sheep are just investigating without much action happening. My seven-year-old started checking the time. There are a few scenes that could have been cut or shortened that would have helped the whole thing move faster.
There’s also one scene with Julia Louis-Dreyfus trying to interview a chicken that goes on too long. It’s funny the first time, but they really milk it, and by the end it’s just killing the momentum.
The Details Are Where It Shines
The background stuff in this movie is really well done. The farm looks lived in. The sheep have actual personalities beyond just being cute. There’s a running joke about one sheep who keeps trying to eat the evidence that made me laugh every single time. The animation on the sheep’s faces during the investigation scenes is surprisingly expressive.
The soundtrack is catchy too. There’s this jazzy detective theme that plays when the sheep are on the case, and it’s instantly memorable. My kids have been humming it all week, which is either a good sign or I’m about to lose my mind.
Look, this isn’t a movie that’s going to change your life. It’s not going to make you think about the human condition or anything. But it’s fun. It’s well made. The voice acting is genuinely good, the mystery actually holds together, and there are jokes that work for both kids and adults. I’d definitely watch it again, and that’s not something I say about a lot of family movies.
If you’re looking for something to take the kids to this weekend, this is worth your time and money. Just maybe skip it if you’re not in the mood for talking sheep solving crimes, because there’s no getting around that central concept. Have you seen it yet, or are you still on the fence about whether a sheep detective movie could actually be good?
